After he became president of Purdue University in 2013, Mitch Daniels asked the faculty to prove that their students have actually achieved one of higher education's most important goals: critical thinking skills. Mr. Daniels, a former governor of Indiana, needed to justify the high cost of attending Purdue to its students and their families. After all, the percentage of Americans who say a college degree is "very important" has fallen from 75 percent in 2010 to 44 percent today.

By Kathryn Doyle (Reuters Health) - According to a new survey, college students are less likely than their non-college peers to be warned by doctors about the dangers of substance abuse or alcohol. The results were surprising, said Dr. Ralph Hingson of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in Bethesda, Maryland, a coauthor of the research letter. "(But) they don't always happen because providers, physicians, nurses and social workers don't routinely ask every young person about their drinking, drug use or smoking," he said.
