How Colleges Consider 529 Plans in Need-Based Financial Aid Posted: 06 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT The college investment accounts known as 529 plans can help families pay for college, but an account might end up working against a student when it comes to need-based financial aid. But how much depends on a few key factors, including how much aid the student will get from federal grants versus institutional, or school-based, grants. For instance, at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln, federal grants are the primary source of financial aid, says Craig Munier, director of the office of scholarships and financial aid at the school. That number, commonly referred to as the EFC, is derived from both the assets and the income as reported on a student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Kentucky Education Bureaucrats Fail To Spell KENTUCKY Correctly Posted: 06 Jun 2014 05:32 AM PDT The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority recently shipped books to every student in the Class of 2015 about how to get into and pay for college with the word "Kentucky" spelled wrong on the spines, reports Louisville Fox affiliate WDRB. State education official Erin Klarer told WDRB that parents, school administrators and other state-level employees have complained about the embarrassing error. In an introductory letter to the free books, entitled simply "Getting In," Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear himself touts them as "the state's premier college planning and financial aid publication for high school students." A similar incident occurred in February 2013 when the campus bookstore at Missouri State University bought and distributed about 9,000 book bags that failed to spell the taxpayer-funded school's name correctly.
