The high school students from New Milford, New Jersey, an affluent suburb about 20 miles northwest of New York City, made about $1,000 in fake $5 and $20 bills with an ink jet printer and heavy stock paper, police said. Facebook's Zuckerberg pumping $120 mln into local schools Posted: 29 May 2014 10:59 PM PDT Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg put out word that he and his wife Priscilla Chan are pumping $120 million into San Francisco Bay Area schools. Distribution of the money will be spread over five years, with initial grants going toward initiatives for providing computers and Internet access in public schools as well as training teachers and enlisting parents in efforts to keep students on track. "The Bay Area is one of the most prosperous places in the world, but there so many schools here that don't have the resources they need," Zuckerberg said in a post on his Facebook page late Thursday. Part of the focus for grant money from his Startup: Education fund will be to start new district and charter schools that provide high quality education. |
Warning label for sugary drinks passes California Senate Posted: 29 May 2014 06:24 PM PDT By Jennifer Chaussee SACRAMENTO Calif. (Reuters) - A bill to require sugary soft drinks to carry labels warning of obesity, diabetes and tooth decay passed the California Senate on Thursday, the latest move by lawmakers nationwide aimed at persuading people to drink less soda. The legislation next goes to the state Assembly, where it is likely to continue to face an ongoing tug-of-war battle between the U.S. food and beverage industry and public health officials, who have lobbied for the measure. Governor Jerry Brown would then have to sign it into law. If implemented, the measure would put California, which banned sodas and junk food from public schools in 2005, in the vanguard of a growing national movement to curb the consumption of high-calorie beverages medical experts say are largely to blame for an epidemic of childhood obesity. "Liquid sugar is a significant and unique driver of obesity, preventable diabetes, and tooth decay," said Democratic state senator Bill Monning, author of the bill. |
