Bernie Sanders campaign touts its diversity and fights 'the narrative of 2016' Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:40 PM PDT The leadership of Sen. Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign held a press call with reporters on Tuesday where they touted figures showing the diversity of their staff and supporters. On his way to losing the Democratic primary to Hillary Clinton in 2016, Sanders was dogged by the impression he was not popular with minorities and that many of his supporters were male "Bernie bros" who were hostile towards women. "The senator is really popular and supported by a diverse coalition despite the narrative that is put out there from time to time," Turner said on the call. |
U.K. Reassures Ireland May's Brexit Pivot Is Real, Source Says Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:06 AM PDT David Lidington, May's de facto deputy, called Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney on Tuesday to explain her initiative to begin talks with opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in a bid to end the deadlock, according to the person, who asked not to be named because the conversation was private. On the call, he assured Coveney that preparations to hold European Parliament elections, a key condition for the U.K. to win a longer extension, were real. |
Chicago police call for state's attorney to resign in Smollett controversy Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:20 PM PDT About 300 people, including off-duty Chicago police officers, gathered at the building where Foxx's office is located in downtown Chicago, wearing "Foxx Must Go!" buttons and carrying signs reading "Resign now" and "Who let the Foxx in the henhouse." Smollett, who is black and gay, ignited a firestorm on social media by telling police on Jan. 29 that two apparent supporters of President Donald Trump struck him, put a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs on a Chicago street. The 36-year-old actor, best known for his role on the Twentieth Century Fox Television hip-hop drama "Empire," was charged in February with staging the incident himself and filing a false police report. In a stunning move on Tuesday, prosecutors dropped all charges against Smollett, angering police who had not been told of the decision ahead of time. |

Reports suggest upcoming Apple iPhone models will have OLED screens, new sizes, bigger batteries Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:01 AM PDT As reported by Digitimes and CNBC, the 2020 iPhones will all have OLED displays in three new sizes from 5.42-inches to 6.67-inches while this year's upcoming lineup will use more powerful batteries with two-way wireless charging. Digitimes reported on Tuesday that Apple will allegedly release a trio of OLED-based iPhones next year that will measure in at 5.42-, 6.06-, and 6.67-inches, a range that spans wider than the company's current flagship devices. Digitimes sources further stated that the 5.42-inch model will come with either Samsung's Y-Octa or LG's TOE touch technology, both of which could provide the phone with a thinner display. |

Samsung might do something it’s never done before with the Galaxy Note 10 Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:17 AM PDT Samsung just announced the official pricing and release date for its new Galaxy S10 5G. The other three S10 models -- Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ -- are already available for sale in every major market, and the upcoming Galaxy Fold is set to finally hit store shelves on April 26th. That leaves one more big flagship smartphone launch for Samsung in 2019, and the Galaxy Note 10 is shaping up to be the company's most impressive handset of the year.Everything we've seen from Samsung so far in 2019 has been quite impressive, actually. The bold new design on the Galaxy S10 series is a breath of fresh air compared to last year's Galaxy S9, which was boring and uninspired. Thankfully, the S10 sports a wonderful all-screen design and it's packed full of nifty new features. Then there's the Galaxy Fold, which the company had been teasing for years before it was finally unveiled back in February. The design isn't quite as impressive as what we've seen from Chinese smartphone makers like Huawei and Xiaomi, but Samsung's first smartphone with a foldable screen will definitely still turn heads when it's released later this month. As great as all those phones are though, the Galaxy Note 10 may end up being the cream of Samsung's crop in 2019. Now, a new report suggests that Samsung will change up its Galaxy Note strategy this year and do something it has never done before with the upcoming Galaxy Note 10.With just a few months left to go until the Galaxy Note 10 is expected to be unveiled, leaks have begun flowing. So far, everything we've heard has been very good news. The Galaxy Note 10 is expected to feature a new design that borrows from the Galaxy S10's all-screen look, but it'll likely be a bit more square since that has been the case with all Note phones in recent years. We've heard the new Note 10 will likely feature a quad-lens camera system on the back with some nifty new features, and we also know there will be a 5G version of Samsung's flagship phablet. Now, a new report suggests that another big change is coming this year.According to Korean-language financial news site The Bell, Samsung plans to release two different Galaxy Note 10 models this year. We're not just talking about a different SKU with 5G support that features the same design as the regular Note 10, we're talking about an entirely different version of the phone. The report states that Samsung will release a main Galaxy Note 10 model in all key markets around the world, but a second version of the Note 10 with a smaller display will also see a limited launch. According to the site's sources, this new smaller Galaxy Note 10 model will only be released in European countries. "We know that the Galaxy Note 10 will come out on the market in two different models," an unnamed source from within Samsung's supply chain told the site. It's unclear what the smaller Galaxy Note 10 model might be called or why it might only be released in Europe. The smaller Galaxy S10e model from Samsung's new S10 lineup has reportedly been selling quite well all around the world, so it seems odd to think that the company might confine the smaller Note 10 version to just one region. As for the main version of the Galaxy Note 10, the report states that the phone will feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, but it doesn't offer any other details about the device. |
Colbert Mocks Trump’s ‘Oranges of the Investigation’ Gaffe Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:50 PM PDT CBSStephen Colbert was not about to let President Trump get away with repeatedly saying the word "oranges" instead of "origins." The president's comments came during an Oval Office press availability on Tuesday during which he completely reversed his position on the release of the full Mueller report. Last week, the president said it "wouldn't bother" him at all to make the report public, but now he said it would be "ridiculous" to "start this process all over again." Imitating Trump, the Late Show host said, "No obstruction, it says so right in the document. And if you try to see the document, I'm going to obstruct you." But it was Trump's "small slip of the brain" that came next that really caught Colbert's attention."I hope they now go and take a look at the oranges, the oranges of the, uh, investigation," Trump told reporters. "The beginnings, of that investigation." "Yes, sir!" Colbert replied. "We must take a look at the oranges of the investigation. I say it is high clementine we do so. The American people will not stangerine for it any longer. We can vitamin C right through the lies. We Tropi-can handle the juice." Then the host told his audience a knock-knock joke that ended with, "Orange you ashamed we have a president who can't pronounce origins?" Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Pittsburgh City Council Approves Assault-Weapon Restrictions in Response to Synagogue Shooting Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:37 AM PDT The Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday passed a series of gun-control bills that were introduced in response to the mass shooting that claimed eleven lives at the city's Tree of Life Synagogue last year. The legislative package, which passed 6–3, prohibits the public use of assault-style rifles like the AR-15 used in the synagogue shooting, bans the use of armor-piercing ammunition and high-capacity magazines, and allows the authorities to temporarily seize the firearms of anyone determined to be dangerous."We're happy to take a stand," Councilman Corey O'Connor, who led the legislative effort, said after the bills passed. "It's going to be a difficult battle, but we are willing to fight it. People are starting to change their minds and be more open to some sort of gun control."Opponents of the legislation booed lawmakers after it was passed, and at least one man vowed to move to an area where his right to self-defense would not be infringed."My guns are not hurting anybody. I have no intent of hurting anybody," lifelong Pittsburgh resident Dennis Jordan told the Council. "I am not going to be allowed to own my guns because of this ordinance. I am ready to move out of this place. You just want to control people. You want to take away my right to protect people."> City council will shortly be voting on gun legislation this morning. We spoke to two members of the public with opposing views. Stay with @KDKA for updates. pic.twitter.com/L7nA6IRfwM> > -- Amy Wadas (@AmyWadas) April 2, 2019The legislation, which initially prohibited the possession of assault-style rifles outright, was weakened in order to make it more likely to survive the legal challenge sure to be brought by pro-Second Amendment activists. Those activists believe Pennsylvania state law, which prohibits municipalities from regulating the possession of guns and ammunition, is on their side."All of it's illegal. Pennsylvania preemption law says that no municipality, period, may in any manner regulate. And that's at the heart of what they're doing," Kim Stolfer, president and co-founder of Firearms Owners Against Crime, told CBS.The legislation was initially introduced days after a lone gunman opened fire inside the Tree of Life Synagogue on October 27, killing eleven and injuring seven in the deadliest attack on Jews in American history.Allegheny County district attorney Stephen Zappala Jr., a Democrat, told City Council members in January that, while he understood their motivation, the proposed legislation was unconstitutional. |

Ukraine's Tymoshenko says won't challenge vote results Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:02 AM PDT Ukraine's former prime minister Yuliya Tymoshenko on Tuesday denounced the results of a "rigged" vote that eliminated her from the presidential race, but said she would not urge street protests. Tymoshenko, an internationally recognised political figure, came third in Sunday's first-round vote in what was also her third bid for the presidency. With 99 percent of the ballots counted, Zelensky was ahead with more than 30 percent of the first-round vote, nearly twice that of Poroshenko, on almost 16 percent. |
Boeing must do more work on proposed 737 fix: US regulator Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:54 AM PDT Boeing must perform more work on a proposed fix to its 737 MAX aircraft before it can be submitted for review, US officials said Monday, suggesting the planes could stay grounded a while longer. Additional work is needed "to ensure that Boeing has identified and appropriately addressed all pertinent issues," a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said in a statement. The FAA statement is the bureaucratic equivalent of a "stop" sign after Boeing officials touted their proposed remedy last week during a media tour at the company's manufacturing plant in Seattle, Washington. |
2 major cases add up to big doubts about Chicago prosecutor Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:37 PM PDT CHICAGO (AP) — Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx was elected in 2016 mainly because of anger that the prosecutor she ousted had waited a year to charge a Chicago police officer in the killing of black teenager Laquan McDonald. Then Foxx, who is a survivor of sexual assault as a child, grabbed national attention by charging singer R. Kelly with aggravated sexual abuse. |
SDF says Syria's Raqqa hit by mine blast, not suicide attack Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:32 AM PDT A blast in Syria's Raqqa on Wednesday that wounded people was caused by an unexploded mine left by Islamic State going off, not by suicide attacks, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said. The head of the SDF's media office Mustafa Bali told journalists in an online message that earlier information it provided about suicide bombings in the city, captured from IS in 2017, was wrong. A string of bombings have in recent months targeted the northeastern corner of Syria held by the SDF, even after its capture of the last Islamic State enclave in the area. |
Pixel 4 leak suggests Google is already testing next-gen flagship prototypes Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:12 AM PDT Google is expected to launch a bunch of Pixel devices this year, including new "Pixel 3 Lite" models that should hit stores at some point in the coming months, as well as the more exciting Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL that are due to be released this fall. We saw a bunch of Pixel 4 leaks and renders in the past few weeks that teased an updated design for the upcoming Google flagships. The phones would pack a Galaxy S10-like hole-punch screen design, which would be a massive improvement over the current Pixel 3 design that's quite boring. Google, meanwhile, isn't afraid to openly discuss the existence of the Pixel 4 over on its Android Open Source Project (AOSP) site, and it's not even bothering to refer to the phone using a codename.A new comment on the AOSP site (via 9to5Google) has the following quote from a Googler:> The plan was to first deploy this on Pixel 3 and make sure that everything actually works. Then move on to Pixel 4 and so on. If I had a Pixel 4 device, I probably wouldn't have bothered with 4.9 in the first place. Here's a screenshot showing the same quote, which mentions the Pixel 4 by name three times:The comment indicates that early Pixel 4 phones are already out in the wild, with some Google developers already having access to prototype versions of the phone. This Googler says doesn't have a Pixel 4 device to test the fix he mentioned, suggesting that some of his colleagues do.The code change doesn't reveal any other details about the Pixel 4. But now that we know Pixel 4 prototypes actually exist, we wouldn't be surprised to see them leak months ahead of the phone's launch, which isn't expected until this coming October. |

Nokia’s new X71 has a stellar design that rivals that of the Galaxy S10 Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:17 PM PDT HMD Global's Nokia 9 PureView might be the best Nokia phone you can buy right now, but the device isn't necessarily perfect. The phone features a "classic" Nokia handset design, which means it has thicker bezels than most consumers want, and relies on last year's top Snapdragon processor to power its penta-lens camera. One of its biggest rivals is Samsung's Galaxy S10 -- a phone that features a hole-punch display design, as well as the latest Qualcomm processor. The S10, however, only features a triple-lens shooter on the back. But HMD just released a Nokia phone that looks a lot like the Galaxy S10 in terms of overall design. Sadly, the Nokia X71 is only selling in Taiwan for the time being, and it's not a flagship handset. The Nokia X71 features a 6.39-inch Full HD LCD with 19.3:9 aspect ratio, with the punch-hole camera placed on the top-left corner, similar to other punch-hole LCD phones from the competition, like Huawei and Samsung. The phone looks a lot like the Galaxy S10, but it's not quite a replica of Samsung's flagship. For starters, the front camera is placed in the opposite corner. Secondly, the display features a thicker bottom bezel, and the fingerprint sensor is placed on the back under the triple-lens camera, rather than under the screen.Other specs include a Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, microSD support, 48-megapixel main rear camera, 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 5-megapixel depth-of-field lens, 16-megapixel selfie cam, 3,500 mAh battery with 18W fast-charging support, USB-C connectivity, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Android 9.0 Pie.It's unclear whether the Nokia X71 will ever be launched in Europe or the US, but the phone will cost NT$11,900, or around $385, in Taiwan when it goes on sale next week. |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:32 AM PDT Donald Trump has mocked congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her plans to address climate change at a Republican party event, dismissing the left-wing Democrat "a young bartender".Speaking to the National Republican Congressional Committee on Tuesday night, Mr Trump attacked Ms Ocasio-Cortez's so-called Green New Deal proposal as "the craziest thing", and suggested the Democrats were "petrified" of her."The Green New Deal, done by a young bartender, 29 years old," he said, referring to her previous employment. "A young bartender, wonderful young woman."The insult followed Ms Ocasio-Cortez's attack on the White House security clearance process after a whistleblower claimed several individuals had received approval despite disqualifying issues. The congresswoman said reports suggested "that we are conducting foreign relations with folks with security clearances via WhatsApp".She added: "I mean, every day that we go without getting to the bottom of this matter is a day that we are putting hundreds, if not potentially thousands of Americans at risk."What is next? Putting nuclear codes in Instagram DMs? This is ridiculous."Her remarks were an apparent reference to evidence previously seen by the committee that the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner used WhatsApp to communicate with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.A Democratic-led committee later voted to subpoena Carl Kline, the former White House security clearance chief, over allegations that the Trump administration inappropriately reversed career officials' decisions to deny security clearances to some of the president's advisers.Whistleblower Tricia Newbold said the Trump administration overruled security experts to give questionable clearances to more than two dozen people. Two sources familiar with the congressional investigation told Reuters that two of the senior officials whose clearances Ms Newbold said were initially denied were Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and Mr Kushner.Speaking at the Republican fundraiser event on Tuesday evening, Mr Trump did not address Ms Ocasio-Cortez's security criticisms, but did concede that the Democrats had a potential electoral advantage on one key issue: health care. "We have to take that away from them," the president said. "Republicans should not run away from health care," he added. "You can't do it. You're going to get clobbered."He also said some of the Democrats' proposals could prove enticing to votes in the short term. He said free health care sounds very seductive. "Don't underestimate the power of socialism to get a vote." The president suggested Ms Ocasio-Cortez's climate change concerns were outside of the mainstream. "If they beat me with the Green New Deal, I deserve to lose," he said. |

Erdogan party appeals Istanbul, Ankara results after Turkey vote Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:40 AM PDT Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP on Tuesday appealed against results in Istanbul and Ankara following a weekend election after tallies showed the ruling party lost both key cities. Erdogan's AKP and coalition partner won more than 50 percent of votes nationwide in Sunday's local ballot, but defeat in both Turkey's capital and its economic hub would be a setback after the party's decade and a half in power. The AKP appeals with electoral authorities, who have two days to decide whether the claims of irregularities have merit, may signal more ruling party challenges to the surprise opposition victories. |

This gorgeous iPhone 11 concept is probably much more exciting than the real thing Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:26 AM PDT This is going to be a very interesting year in the smartphone industry. Android phone makers typically take cues from Apple and follow the company's every move. Just look at all the shameless Android-powered iPhone X copycats that hit the market after Apple released the phone in 2017. In 2019, however, the smartphone landscape looks nothing like it did in late 2017 and throughout most of 2018. Instead, Android vendors have moved on to even better all-screen smartphone designs while Apple continues to use the same notched screen design it introduced on the iPhone X. And if you're an Apple fan, we have some more bad news: It looks like things are going to get worse before they get any better.According to reports from multiple sources including the most accurate Apple insider out there, the iPhone 11 series that launches later this year will sport a design that's almost identical to the iPhone X and iPhone XS. That's right, Apple apparently plans to use the same phone design three years in a row, just like it did with the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7. This year's iPhone 11 is expected to look just like last year's iPhone XS and 2017's iPhone X from the front, and the back will be the same apart from frosted glass instead of clear glass and a new camera array. Those minor design changes aren't exactly exciting, so one graphic designer decided to play with what we've seen so far and create an iPhone 11 concept that looks much better than what we've seen so far in leaks. For those who need a refresher, here's what we're expecting from the iPhone 11 when Apple unveils it this coming September:In a word, meh.Graphic designer Hasan Kaymak apparently finds the prospect of an iPhone 11 that looks the same as the iPhone X and iPhone XS other than a bulbous camera bump to be just as boring as we do. In an effort to spice things up, he decided to riff on it a bit. He created a series of renders that imagine what the iPhone 11 might look like if it used the same camera design, but also mixed in some retro flavor design trends from 2019.The result is a sleek iPhone 11 that has flat metal edges like the iPhone 5 and iPhone SE that everyone loves, but also a hole-punch display similar to the Galaxy S10. The resulting design isn't perfect, but it's certainly better than using the same design for a third consecutive year.First, we don't like the centrally located hole-punch cameras at all -- the hole looks much better in a corner. On top of that, Kaymak's design doesn't leave room for any of the other sensors that the TrueDepth camera system needs in order to function. Face ID isn't going anywhere, and the tech needed to hide the sensors under the screen isn't yet ready for mass production. As a result, this iPhone 11 concept design is completely unfeasible. The modernized iPhone SE look is fantastic though, and we definitely prefer it to Apple's current rounded edges. Maybe someday Apple will go back to basics and build an iPhone like this, but sadly it won't be in 2019.A video featuring Kaymak's design is embedded below.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YCK4ZZYips |

Pound rises versus dollar on May's Brexit gamble Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:43 AM PDT The British pound rose against the dollar Wednesday after Prime Minister Theresa May offered cross-party talks with the leader of the opposition Labour Party in a political gamble aimed at resolving the Brexit impasse. Sterling won a boost after Conservative leader May declared late Tuesday that she would look for another Brexit delay and softened her position to try and avert a messy no-deal divorce from the European Union next week. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has consistently called for Britain to remain in a customs union with the bloc, while the government has so far ruled this out saying Britain should have an independent trade policy after Brexit. |
