Boeing 737 MAX safety record questioned after two tragedies Posted: 10 Mar 2019 10:48 PM PDT For the second time in less than six months, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 has crashed minutes after takeoff and killed everyone on board, raising fresh questions about the safety of a model that is crucial to the US giant's future plans. On Sunday, the 157 passengers and crew members of a 737 MAX operated by Ethiopian Airlines were killed. China -- an important market for Boeing -- became the first country to ground the 737 MAX 8 on Monday. |

Venezuelan Police Arrest Prominent Journalist as He Cycles Home Posted: 12 Mar 2019 06:47 AM PDT The arrest is an escalation of President Nicolas Maduro's aggressive attempts to silence and intimidate the press, which include the recent temporary detentions of Univision journalist Jorge Ramos and U.S. freelance reporter Cody Weddle, deported last week. Diaz was grabbed by intelligence police while biking home from the Union Radio network, according to his wife. |
Talk to Pakistan, former Modi ally urges India amid Kashmir tension Posted: 11 Mar 2019 11:06 AM PDT Mehbooba Mufti, who was chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir from early 2014 to June last year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party withdrew support for her regional party, said an ongoing crackdown on militants and those supporting secession could further alienate the people. India has vowed to kill all the militants in the country's only Muslim-majority state if they do not give up arms, after a 20-year-old local man killed 40 paramilitary troopers in a suicide attack last month. Indian security forces have killed 18 militants in Kashmir since then, the army said on Monday. |

US tech giant Nvidia in biggest ever deal with $6.9bn takeover of Israel's Mellanox Posted: 11 Mar 2019 09:32 AM PDT The US computer giant Nvidia has made its biggest-ever acquisition with a $6.9bn (£5.3bn) takeover of Israel's Mellanox. The deal represents a strategic shift towards cloud computing for Nvidia after a share crash at the end of last year triggered by the end of the cryptocurrency boom and slow sales of its computer game graphics chips. Nvidia is best known for graphical processors, which are used in video and game production but have also become surprisingly proficient at intensive computing tasks such as cryptocurrency mining and artificial intelligence. Its shares rose ten-fold between 2016 and last September amid booming interest in AI and the Bitcoin bubble, but lost half their value at the end of last year as cryptocurrency mining became unprofitable and sales of the graphics cards it sells to video gamers slowed, particularly in China. Mellanox's networking technology is used within data centres, the remote stacks of powerful computers used by companies to store and process vast amounts of information. Its technology transfers data at high speeds within and between the data centres, which are increasingly in demand due to the rise of cloud computing services in which companies rent server space from Amazon, Microsoft and others. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, said: "The emergence of AI and data science, as well as billions of simultaneous computer users, is fueling skyrocketing demand on the world's data centers." The two companies have previously worked together on the world's two most powerful supercomputers, the IBM-built systems used by the US government. Nvidia reportedly beat away competition from Intel for the acquisition. Intel has also been leaning more heavily on its data centre business as the market for personal computers shrinks. It is by far the company's biggest acquisition to date, worth almost 20 times the $367m it paid for modem company Icera in 2011. Shares in Nvidia rose by more than 5pc on news of the deal. |

Leading English-language national dailies including the Times of India, the Hindustan Times and the Indian Express carried no government ads on Monday. The New Delhi editions of those three newspapers had 162 government ads between March 1 and March 10, according to Reuters calculations. |

Chinese database openly listing personal details of 1.8m women Posted: 11 Mar 2019 08:02 AM PDT A security researcher claims to have uncovered a database in China that is publicly listing the personal information of more than 1.8m women, making available sensitive data such as their phone numbers, home addresses and "BreedReady" status. According to Victor Gevers, a Dutch researcher at non-profit organisation GDI.Foundation, the cache holding personal details of the Chinese citizens is "unprotected". In screenshots posted to Twitter by Mr Gevers, the open database is seen to contain extensive categories of data about the women, including their age, identity card digits, birthday, marital status and "BreedyReady" status, which is thought to refer to whether or not a woman has a child or has the potential to "breed". Mr Gevers found the youngest girl on the database to be aged 15 years old, with the average age of people listed on the database 32. Around 82pc of the women appear to be located in Beijing. "In China, they have a shortage of women. So an organisation started to build a database to start registering over 1.8 million women with all kinds of details like phone numbers, addresses, education, location, ID number, marital status and a "BreedReady" status?" he said on Twitter. Technology intelligence - newsletter promo - EOA China has more than 29,000 open databases, according to specialist search engine ZoomEye, and the personal data being so readily-available raises concerns about the security of open databases in the country. It is unclear what the purpose of the database would be, but evidence suggests that Chinese authorities are growing increasingly concerned about a drop in birth rates in the country. Some firms in the country have started giving women a "dating leave" to encourage marriage. The database, which was first found by Mr Gevers at the weekend, has been unreachable for a number of hours on Monday. "We will keep an eye on that IP address for a while to make sure it doesn't come back online. We still do not know [who] the owner was or what the database was actually designed for," he said. "When we do we will share this." |

Microsoft filed the complaint against Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile Ltd in the Northern District of California on Friday. Foxconn founder and Chief Executive Terry Gou told an impromptu news conference in Taipei that "patent infringement" is not an issue for his company, which "will suffer almost no any loss" as a result of the lawsuit. |

Venezuela plunged into darkness for fourth consecutive day as country teeters on brink Posted: 11 Mar 2019 01:57 AM PDT Sunday was the fourth day since Venezuela's power system went down, plunging most of the country, including Caracas, the capital, into sporadic darkness and dampening hopes of imminent resolution to a devastating blackout that has brought the country to the verge of social implosion. "We're going to arrive at a moment when we're going to eat each other," said Zuly González, 40, a resident of Caracas' Chacao neighbourhood. Venezuela has been devastated for years by hyperinflation and a failing economy that has led millions to flee. |

Worst Advice Ever Given to Law School Applicants Posted: 12 Mar 2019 07:00 AM PDT If you're reading this, chances are that you've at least considered applying to law school and have probably realized that the process is a little more complex than you had originally thought. While getting some help is generally a good idea, the law school application process is far from simple and is ever evolving. Someone who hasn't been in the field for a while, like your mom who graduated from law school 25 years ago, or isn't making an effort to stay up to date with all of the developments, such as a school adviser whose job description isn't specifically focused on law schools, might provide you with some bad advice. |
Russian passenger jet makes emergency landing in Baku over bomb threat Posted: 11 Mar 2019 06:02 AM PDT BAKU/MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian Ural Airlines jet bound for Moscow from Bahrain with 225 people aboard made an emergency landing in Baku, Azerbaijan on Monday because of a suspected bomb on board the plane, Baku airport said. Flight U6-1116 was en route to Moscow's Domodedovo airport when the crew "received information about possible restricted items" on board, a spokeswoman for Ural Airlines said. The crew of the Airbus A-321 plane requested an emergency landing at the nearest airport to have checks carried out and it landed in Baku, she said. |

Flight to Malaysia forced to turn around after mother leaves baby at airport Posted: 11 Mar 2019 08:45 PM PDT A young mother on a flight from Saudi Arabia to Malaysia reportedly had the shock of her life when she realised she had accidentally left her baby behind in the airport terminal. The Saudi Arabian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur returned to its gate in King Abdulaziz airport, Jeddah after the panicked woman alerted cabin crew that she had forgotten to bring her child. A video of the pilot requesting Air Traffic Control in Arabic and English for permission to return has gone viral on social media. "May God be with us. Can we come back or what?" he is heard asking. One of the surprised controllers can then be heard telling a colleague: "This flight is requesting to come back…a passenger forgot her baby in the waiting area, the poor thing." He then adds: "OK, head back to the gate. This is totally a new one for us!" The Gulf News reported that the bizarre incident took place over the weekend, implying that the plane was already in the air. However, some reports have suggested that the flight had not yet taken off, and the sequence of events is unclear from the video. The story ended happily, with the mother and baby reunited. The circumstances that led to her forgetting the baby are not known, but it would not be the first high-profile story of a parent unwittingly leaving a child behind. Former British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha had a heart-stopping moment in 2012 when they realised they had left a Buckinghamshire pub without their daughter Nancy, 8. After meeting friends at the pub, they left in separate cars, only to realise at their destination that Nancy was not in either of them. When the prime minister's wife rushed back distraught to the venue, she found her daughter safe and well and helping the staff. Tesla changes course, will keep more showrooms open Posted: 11 Mar 2019 06:41 AM PDT Electric carmaker Tesla is reversing course on its decision to move most of its sales online, saying it will keep many of its showrooms open -- but will need to hike prices to do so. Tesla said in a statement late Sunday the new plan will mean a three percent rise in the cost of the vehicles, but won't apply that to the lowest-priced Model 3, which is being sold for $35,000. "As a result of keeping significantly more stores open, Tesla will need to raise vehicle prices by about three percent on average worldwide," the statement said. |

EU warns of no-deal Brexit, says cannot offer more Posted: 12 Mar 2019 01:46 PM PDT The British parliament's rejection of the Brexit agreement makes crashing out of the EU without a deal much more likely, the bloc said Tuesday, as it warned there is no more it can do. Lawmakers inflicted another crushing defeat on beleaguered Prime Minister Theresa May, voting to reject the divorce deal, even after she secured further guarantees from Brussels. Senior EU officials lined up to voice regret at the result, and to hammer home the message that Brussels would not make any further concessions to help May win over recalcitrant MPs. |
