"The Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee has indicated that Lion Air flight 610 experienced erroneous input from one of its AOA (Angle of Attack) sensors," Boeing said. Lion Air JT610 plunged into the Java Sea less than half an hour after taking off from Jakarta on a routine flight to Pangkal Pinang city. |

After deadly Lion Air crash, new focus on torrid industry growth in Indonesia Posted: 08 Nov 2018 12:58 AM PST The EU removed the privately owned budget airline from the list in 2016 after it determined Lion Air met international safety standards. None of Indonesia's roughly 100 airlines - most of them tiny - remain on the EU blacklist, with the last few coming off in June. The crash of a Lion Air jet on Oct. 29 into the sea off Jakarta has put a spotlight back on the airline's safety record, although the cause remains undetermined. |

San Francisco voters back 'homeless tax' on wealthy firms Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:30 PM PST San Francisco voters backed a tax on the city's wealthiest companies to tackle homelessness, passing a measure that divided the tech community. A tally posted Wednesday showed that 60 percent of voters in the city home to Airbnb, Uber, Salesforce, and Twitter cast ballots in favor of "Proposition C," a local ballot measure brought about by a 28,000 signature petition this summer. A number of San Francisco's tech bosses -- including Twitter chief Jack Dorsey and Patrick Collison of payment startup Stripe -- resisted the proposal. |

Kentucky county clerk who refused same-sex marriage licenses loses re-election bid Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:35 PM PST Kim Davis, the county clerk in Kentucky who was briefly jailed for defying a court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has lost her bid for re-election. SEE ALSO: Lurking John King is the best part of CNN's election coverage As reported by CNN, the controversial conservative Republican was beaten by Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr. in Rowan County by about 650 votes, according to unofficial results posted by the state elections board. Clerk's race, defeating incumbent Kim Davis. @WKYT pic.twitter.com/h2GiVresEO — Matthew Rand (@MatthewWKYT) November 7, 2018 Davis, part of a denomination called Apostolic Christianity, made headlines in 2015 after she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, despite a historic Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriages across the country the same year. Davis was found in contempt of court for not issuing the licenses and also stopping her six deputy clerks from signing them, and she spent five days in jail. Kentucky later changed the law, so that marriage licenses statewide that no longer require county clerks' names to appear on them. Davis was soon back in the seat, earning just shy of $80,000 a year as country clerk, which WDRB reports as more than twice what the average job pays in Rowan County, Kentucky. Caudill won the Democratic nomination in May to take on Davis, defeating David Ermold, a gay man who was denied a marriage license by Davis "under God's authority," in 2015. Ermold announced he was running for county clerk in December, and raised more than $200,000 in funding. But Caudill, chief deputy in the county property valuation office, eventually won over the Democrats. High blood pressure before age 40 linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease later in life Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:01 AM PST New US research has found that younger adults with high blood pressure before the age of 40 have an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart failure, strokes and blood vessel blockages as they age. Led by researchers at Duke Health, the study used the new US blood pressure guidelines issued in 2017, which lowered the clinical definition of high blood pressure from earlier levels, to investigate the association between level of blood pressure (BP) in young adulthood and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by middle age. |

Ex-NY Attorney General Schneiderman will not face criminal charges Posted: 08 Nov 2018 09:35 AM PST Prosecutors said on Thursday they have decided not to bring criminal charges against former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who resigned in May after four women accused him of physical abuse. The decision was announced by Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, who was appointed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to investigate the allegations shortly after Schneiderman's sudden May 7 resignation. Singas said she personally interviewed Schneiderman's accusers and found them credible, but that state law made it impossible to bring criminal charges. |
