Russia begins missile system delivery to Syria, warns West on peace talks Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:57 PM PDT Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had said on Monday the system would be delivered to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces in two weeks despite strong Israeli and United States objections. A week previously, Moscow had accused Israel of indirectly causing the downing of a Russian military jet in Syria. "The delivery started already and as President (Vladimir)Putin said, after that incident ... the measures that we will take will be devoted to ensuring 100 percent safety and security of our men," Lavrov told a news conference at the United Nations. |

US wants death penalty for NY truck attack suspect Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:50 PM PDT US federal prosecutors on Friday signaled their intention to seek the death penalty against the Uzbek immigrant accused of killing eight people in a New York truck rampage, should he be convicted at trial. Sayfullo Saipov, 30, allegedly drove a rented pickup truck down a mile-long stretch of bike path in Manhattan as children and their parents prepared to celebrate Halloween on October 31, 2017. It was the deadliest attack in New York since the September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda hijackings brought down the Twin Towers. |

The pilot, who was the only person on board the Lockheed Martin F-35B, was being examined for injuries on Friday after safely ejecting. The reason for the crash near the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina, is said to be under investigation. |

The Future of Real Estate -- With Fewer Agents? Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:04 PM PDT The real estate industry is facing disruption, and not just on one front. New real estate brokerages are offering an alternative to the way agents do business, tech startups are providing more information and ease of access to consumers and professionals, and companies are helping consumers bypass the need for a real estate agent altogether. Some argue that real estate agents will become obsolete, while others believe the way real estate transactions are closed will evolve. |

Adam Schiff, the committee's top Democrat, told reporters after the meeting that Republicans refused to make some of the most important transcripts public, including interviews with fired FBI Director James Comey and Admiral Mike Rogers, the former National Security Agency director. |

The inauguration capped a controversial three-day state visit aimed at repairing frayed ties with Berlin after two years of tensions. During his stay in Berlin, Erdogan met twice with Angela Merkel for talks, with both leaders signalling their interest in a cautious rapprochement. |

Reporter's notebook: Watching as the world watches Trump Posted: 28 Sep 2018 12:54 PM PDT When President Trump this week regaled a fancy New York hotel ballroom full of journalists with a tale of how China's leaders respect him for his "very, very large brain," it rang a bell with me. Ah yes, I thought, as I observed the ripple of laughter the president's remark elicited: Mr. Trump's NATO summit press conference, just a few weeks earlier in Brussels. In that case, hundreds of mostly foreign journalists had assembled in a large press conference tent to glean any clues as to the US leader's intentions for the transatlantic alliance. |
Mexico says US, Canada could reach new NAFTA deal in 48 hours Posted: 28 Sep 2018 06:21 PM PDT The United States and Canada have told Mexico they could reach a compromise within 48 hours on keeping the updated North American Free Trade Agreement a three-country deal, the Mexican economy minister said Friday. Speaking as he presented the Mexican Senate with the current US-Mexican agreement to update NAFTA -- which does not include Canada, the third member of the original deal -- Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said Washington and Ottawa were making a "very serious," last-ditch attempt to bridge their differences. |

Lavrov notes Trump blamed China, not Russia, for U.S. election meddling Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:22 PM PDT Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took pleasure in pointing out on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump this week accused China, not Russia, of interfering in U.S. elections. Trump on Wednesday accused the Chinese government of seeking to influence the Nov. 6 U.S. congressional elections against his Republican Party. China has denied the allegation. |
UN rights council renews Yemen war crimes probe Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:10 AM PDT The United Nations Human Rights Council voted to extend an international probe of alleged war crimes committed in Yemen despite strong opposition from Saudi Arabia and several of its allies. Last month, investigators detailed evidence of possible war crimes committed in Yemen by both the Saudi-led coalition and the Huthi rebels supported by Iran. The coalition and the Yemeni government, which together are battling the Huthis, strongly criticised the probe's initial report, arguing that it underplayed rebel violations and Iran's role. |
DA: Missing woman died instantly in jump from mom's car Posted: 27 Sep 2018 06:03 PM PDT PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A young mother whose disappearance last month on the way home from a wedding in rural Oregon prompted a days-long search did not wander off but died instantly when she exited her mother's moving car, hit her head on a guard rail and slid down an embankment, a prosecutor said Thursday. |
Canadian MPs vote to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of honorary citizenship Posted: 27 Sep 2018 09:58 PM PDT The Canadian parliament has voted unanimously to strip Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's civilian leader, of her honorary citizenship after global criticism of her handling of the Rohingya crisis. Ottawa had awarded the symbolic honour, which does not afford Canadian rights or privileges, to the Nobel laureate in 2007 after she endured years of house arrest as a political prisoner. The vote in the House of Commons lower chamber means that she will no longer be a member of an elite group of only five other honorary Canadians, which includes Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, and the Dalai Lama. The decision, which must still be ratified by the Senate, comes one week after another unanimous vote by Canadian MPs to declare the Burmese military campaign against the Rohingya Muslim minority a genocide. The Burmese army is accused of mass killings, rape and arson in a brutal crackdown last year which drove more than 700,000 Rohingya into neighbouring Bangladesh, where they now live in cramped refugee camps. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt meets with members of the Rohingya community in Rakhine State Credit: Ye Aung Thu/AFP A spokesman for Chrystia Freeland, Canada's foreign minister, confirmed to the Globe and Mail that the government supported the motion to revoke Ms Suu Kyi's citizenship in response to "her continued failure to speak out against the genocide of the Rohingya, a crime being committed by the military with which she shares power." Ms Suu Kyi was previously called out by a searing United Nations investigation for failing to use her "moral authority" to prevent violence against the Rohingya minority. The investigation by three independent UN experts, which concludes that Burma's top generals should be tried for genocide, and the case referred to the International Criminal Court, was presented to the UN's Human Rights Council in Geneva last week. The rights body voted on Thursday to set up an independent panel to prepare criminal indictments over the atrocities committed in Burma. Saw for myself in Rakhine that real accountability for atrocities requires this new mechanism to secure the evidence. Burma has been a priority for us here at #UNGA so the decision by @UN_HRC today is great news. Step forward but much more to do. https://t.co/QEpHvhouWh— Jeremy Hunt (@Jeremy_Hunt) September 27, 2018 Thirty-five of the council's 47 members supported a text that mandates the panel to prepare "files in order to facilitate and expedite fair and independent criminal proceedings... in national, regional or international courts or tribunals." Only three countries – China, the Philippines and Burundi – voted against the resolution. Jeremy Hunt, the British foreign secretary, welcomed the decision as a "step forward" for establishing justice. "Saw for myself in Rakhine that real accountability for atrocities requires this new mechanism to secure the evidence. Burma has been a priority for us her at #UNGA so the decision by @UN_HRC today is great news. Step forward but much more to do," he said on Twitter. The military has denied nearly all wrongdoing, justifying its crackdown as a legitimate means of rooting out Rohingya militants. |
Syria rebel faction rejects Idlib deal Posted: 29 Sep 2018 10:02 AM PDT A formerly US-backed Syrian rebel group on Saturday rejected a deal between Russia and Turkey to avert a large-scale military assault on rebel-held Idlib province. The deal makes way for a demilitarised zone between rebel and regime-held areas in and around the northwestern governorate, Syria's last insurgent bastion. |
India's top court lifts Hindu temple ban on women of menstruating age Posted: 28 Sep 2018 06:58 AM PDT The authorities at the Sabarimala temple, which attracts tens of millions of pilgrims every year, have said the ban on women and girls aged from 10 to 50 was essential to the rites related to the temple's chief deity Ayyappan, considered eternally celibate. In some Hindu communities, menstruating women are regarded as unclean, leading to restrictions and in a few cases outright bans on women of child-bearing age from entering certain places. Lifting the ban, the Chief Justice of India said "restrictions put by Sabarimala temple can't be held as essential religious practice". |
