Trump's tweet doesn't convince Ford to build small crossover SUV in US

Posted: 10 Sep 2018 05:06 AM PDT

Trump's tweet doesn't convince Ford to build small crossover SUV in USA tweet from the Oval Office on Sunday wasn't enough to convince Ford Motor Company to build a new compact crossover SUV version of its Focus in the U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Ford's announcement last month that the administration's tariffs on goods including cars imported from China prompted it to cancel plans to import the 2020 Focus Active. "Ford has abruptly killed a plan to sell a Chinese-made small vehicle in the U.S. because of the prospect of higher U.S. Tariffs." CNBC.  This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 9, 2018 A Ford spokesman responded on Twitter. "It would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the U.S. given an expected annual sales volume of fewer than 50,000 units and its competitive segment," Ford spokesman Mike Levine said. The Focus Active, Ford's answer to the popular Subaru Crosstrek, will still be assembled in China for other global markets. The automaker said earlier this year that as part of its $11 billion restructuring, it will stop selling its Ford Fusion, Taurus, Fiesta, and Focus in the U.S. and cancel all of its sedans and hatchbacks over the next couple of years to sell more profitable crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks.  Assembly of the Focus in the U.S. ended in May and the automaker plans to cut off Fiesta and Taurus production during the 2019 model year. Its Fusion mid-size sedan will continue for about another year and the nameplate may morph into a crossover SUV

In an hours-long televised speech late on Sunday, the 74-year-old railed against the opposition and accused "external forces" of seeking to "sabotage" Uganda's growth. Brussels will not turn Hungary into 'country of migrants', rages Viktor Orban

Posted: 11 Sep 2018 08:14 AM PDT

Brussels will not turn Hungary into 'country of migrants', rages Viktor OrbanViktor Orban warned he would never allow Brussels to transform Hungary into "a country of migrants" on Tuesday, ahead of an unprecedented vote tomorrow in the European Parliament that could strip Budapest of its EU voting rights. MEPs will vote on whether to trigger "Article 7", an EU law drafted to ensure respect for democracy and the rule of law, amid fears that Mr Orban is turning Hungary into a dictatorship.  "You believe you know better than the Hungarians themselves," Mr Orban told MEPs, after arriving late at Tuesday's debate. "Hungary will be condemned because Hungarians have decided their country is not going to be a country of migrants." Hungary will become the first country to face the procedure because of a European Parliament vote, if it is passed by the required two-thirds majority. Poland is also undergoing the Article 7 process, but in its case this was triggered by the European Commission rather than a parliament vote. National governments must back any action and Budapest has already vowed to veto any punishment levied on Warsaw.   Mr Orban is at loggerheads with Brussels over mandatory migrant relocation quotas, as well as laws in Hungary cracking down on NGOs, the media and the Central European University. In an incendiary speech that exposed deep EU divisions, he claimed the "verdict was already written" by a "pro-migration majority", despite his Fidesz party being a member of the European Peoples Party (EPP), the largest parliament group. "We will protect our borders and we will decide who to live together with. We have built a fence and we have stopped illegal migrants. Hundreds of thousands of them. We have defended Hungary and we have defended Europe," he said. "This is the first case in the history of Europe when a community has condemned its own border guard," he added.  Perceived share of immigrants in national population "Thank God there is at least one European leader prepared to stand up for his principles, his culture, his nation and his people in the face of such extreme bullying," said Nigel Farage, the MEP and former Ukip leader. "Come and join the Brexit club. You'll love it," he said, after telling Mr Orban he was at a "show trial". Merkel's migration tensions | Read more There is speculation that EPP support for Mr Orban is splintering but British Conservative MEPs will vote against Article 7 because it "infringes the sovereignty of a member state".  "Will you ensure that the values of this Union are more than just words written on a piece of paper?" asked Judith Sargentini, the Dutch Green MEP who wrote the parliament report that will be voted on. Mr Orban echoed Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras and Guy Verhofstadt, the federalist MEP, in predicting that next May's European Parliament elections would be a battle between pro-EU and anti-migrant, nationalistic parties.

Exclusive: Venezuela signs oil deals similar to ones rolled back under Chavez - documentThe effort signals that President Nicolas Maduro, who is struggling under a hyper-inflationary economic meltdown and fast-declining oil output, is willing to reverse the aggressive efforts of his predecessor - who died in 2013 - to expand the state's role in the energy industry of the OPEC nation. The government had already announced a vague plan to boost oil output with the help of seven companies. The plan was described during a televised event on Aug. 28 in which representatives of those companies, during a ceremony including Maduro, signed "joint service agreements" with PDVSA.

Cambodia opposition leader released from prison on bailCambodia's opposition leader Kem Sokha was released from jail early Monday a year after he was detained on treason charges, as the country's strongman ruler loosens his grip on opponents after sweeping one-sided elections. Over a 33-year rule, the wily Hun Sen has tightened and relaxed his chokehold on opponents at will, most recently launching a broad crackdown in the run-up to July elections that gifted his ruling party an uncontested victory. As part of that action Kem Sokha, the head of the only serious opposition the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), was arrested on September 3, 2017, and accused of treason.
