Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:28 PM PDT Chicago activists have warned a sprawling anti-violence protest may lead to multiple arrests and the shutdown of busy streets. The demonstration was being organised in an effort to unseat Rahm Emanuel, Chicago's Democratic mayor, and Eddie Johnson, the city's police superintendent, according to organisers. Protestors planned to march from Lake Shore Drive to Wrigleyville in the middle of Thursday rush hour, and had not ruled out entering the Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres. |

Zimbabwe warns of crackdown after opposition vote protests Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:13 PM PDT Zimbabwe's government vowed Wednesday to crack down on opposition dissent after three people were killed when protests against alleged electoral fraud were met by live ammunition, denting hopes of a new era for the country. Soldiers fired on demonstrators during opposition MDC party protests in downtown Harare, AFP witnesses saw, with one man shot dead in the stomach. Monday's polls -- the first since autocratic president Robert Mugabe was forced out by a brief military takeover in November -- had been meant to turn the page on years of violence-marred elections and brutal repression of dissent. |

Russia to deploy military police on Golan Heights Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:21 AM PDT By Denis Pinchuk and Tom Balmforth MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia will deploy its military police on the Golan Heights frontier between Syria and Israel, its defense ministry said on Thursday, after weeks of mounting volatility in the area. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's sweeping away of rebels in southwestern Syria has worried Israel, which believes it could allow his Iranian backers to entrench their troops close to the frontier. Underlining the tensions, Israel killed seven militants in an overnight air strike on the Syrian-held part of the Golan Heights, Israeli radio said on Thursday. |

In a nod to his battlefield gains, Israel described victory by Assad, who is on a last push to restore his rule after more than seven years of civil war, as a fait accompli that could calm the Golan Heights. The strategic plateau divides Israel and Syria, old foes, and saw decades of stable stand-off before the Syrian rebellion. |
