Chinese woman 'detained' after tossing ink on Xi poster: activists Posted: 16 Jul 2018 10:30 PM PDT A woman who live-streamed herself throwing ink onto a picture of Chinese President Xi Jinping has been detained, according to activists who accuse authorities of suppressing speech to protect a "cult of personality" around the country's leader. The US-based Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) activist network said authorities have also taken the woman's father and a Chinese artist into custody after they sought to publicise her plight on social media. |

Anger over 'callous' Magufuli remarks on prisoners Posted: 16 Jul 2018 08:28 AM PDT Amnesty International on Monday slammed Tanzanian President John Magufuli for ordering that prisoners be made to work "day and night" and be kicked if lazy. "All people deprived of their liberty must be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person," Amina Hersi, Amnesty International's East Africa campaigner told AFP. "President Magufuli's statement that lazy inmates should be 'kicked' is not only callous but if implemented would amount to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment," she added. |
Eritrea reopens embassy in Addis Ababa in fresh sign of thaw with Ethiopia Posted: 16 Jul 2018 05:27 AM PDT By Aaron Maasho ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Eritrea reopened its embassy in Ethiopia on Monday in further evidence of a rapid thaw between two countries that a week ago ended two decades of military stalemate over a border war in which tens of thousands died. Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrea's President Isaias Afwerki re-opened the embassy in the capital Addis Ababa in a brief ceremony, a Reuters witness said. One week ago the leaders declared their "state of war" over and Isaias spent the weekend in Ethiopia. |

Trump blames Russia rift on US probe, Moscow agrees Posted: 16 Jul 2018 03:57 AM PDT Donald Trump on Monday blamed bad relations between Moscow and Washington on the US investigation into alleged Russian election meddling -- and Russia promptly agreed. Setting the scene just hours ahead of his summit with Vladimir Putin, Trump took to Twitter to lash out at US special prosecutor Robert Mueller's probe. "Our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of U.S. foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!" Trump tweeted, with a swipe at his White House predecessors. |
British caver considering legal action after Elon Musk 'pedo' tweet Posted: 16 Jul 2018 01:27 PM PDT A British caver hailed a hero for helping to save the lives of 12 boys and their football coach trapped deep inside a Thai cave has said he may take action against Elon Musk after the billionaire entrepreneur called him a "pedo" online. The Tesla CEO lashed out on Sunday evening at Vernon Unsworth, 63, in an extraordinary tirade on Twitter after the cave diver scoffed at Mr Musk's offer of a specialised miniature submarine to evacuate the boys through a twisted and dangerously flooded underground passageway. Mr Unsworth, who has mapped the Tham Luang cave network for years and who played a pivotal role in the daring rescue operation to dive the boys to safety dismissed the submarine idea as a "PR stunt" in an interview with CNN, quipping that the entrepreneur could stick the invention "where it hurts." The Briton said that the six-foot submarine "wouldn't have made the first 50 metres in the cave" as it was rigid and would not have gone round any corners or obstacles in the difficult terrain. His comments were not well-received by Mr Musk, who had travelled to Thailand last week at the height of the crisis to present his submarine to the rescue teams. In a stream of bizarre tweets Mr Musk first told his 22 million-strong Twitter following that he "never saw this British expat guy who lives in Thailand (sus) at any point when we were in the caves." By "sus" Mr Musk was presumed to have meant "suspect", implying that a British man living in Thailand is in itself dubious. Musk later deleted the tweets calling Unsworth a pedo Credit: BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP He went on to dispute Mr Unsworth's claim that the submarine concept was unworkable, arguing that he would produce a video to prove that the device would have reached the children. "Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it," he said, without directly naming Mr Unsworth or providing any justification or explanation for the slur. Doubling down on his comments as criticisms rolled in, he said: "Bet ya a signed dollar it's true." The tweets have since been deleted and Musk has not responded to media requests for comment. Mr Unsworth told AFP on Monday he had not reviewed the tweets in full and had only heard about them. Asked if he would take legal action against the billionaire over the allegation, he said: "If it's what I think it is yes." The caver added that he would make a decision when he flies back to the UK this week, but said the episode with Musk "ain't finished". Mr Unsworth who lives close to the caves, in the city of Chiang Rai with his wife, was instrumental in forming the elite team of international divers who spearheaded a mission by the Thai Navy Seals to rescue the 'Wild Boars' football team who were sheltering in a dark cavern 2.5 miles inside the cave. When he realised the scale of the problem facing Thai rescue teams, Mr Unsworth immediately called on British world-class divers John Volanthen, Rick Stanton and Robert Harper, who were the first to discover the emaciated boys ten days after they had gone missing. Musk released images of a device by SpaceX and The Boring Company designed to help in the Thai cave rescue bid Credit: REUTERS The Brits were joined by specialists from Belgium, Scandinavia and Australia, including Dr Richard Harris, an anaesthetist tasked with assessing whether the boys were medically capable of making the life-threatening dive. The perilous mission was considered to be a last resort as looming monsoon rains threatened to flood the cave even further. Some divers have since admitted that they did not expect all of the boys, aged 11-16, to survive. It has now emerged that Dr Harris and Craig Challen, a retired vet and his diving buddy, were given diplomatic immunity ahead of the risky operation "in case something went wrong" , after negotiations between Australian and Thai government officials. "Doctor Richard Harris did his utmost on the medical mission he was responsible for, but if something went wrong he needed protection," Don Pramudwinai, the Thai Foreign Minister, said. "We provided this only to Dr. Richard Harris and two medical assistants. Only to the Australian medical team." All 12 boys and their coach, Ekapol Chanthawong, 25, beat the odds and survived. They are now recovering in hospital and are expected to be released on Thursday. |

Strikes blamed on Israel killed 9 pro-regime fighters in Syria: monitor Posted: 16 Jul 2018 12:49 AM PDT At least nine pro-regime fighters died in a suspected Israeli missile strike overnight in northern Syria, a monitor said Monday. Syrian state media had accused Israel of bombing a military position in Aleppo province late Sunday, in what would be a rare Israeli strike so far north in the war-ravaged country. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said the base was being used by the Syrian regime's arch-ally Iran. |

Suspect Emanuel Lopes, 20, was arrested early Sunday after police in Weymouth, Massachusetts, received a report of a person driving erratically. "The Norfolk District Attorney's Office has now been informed that Emanuel Lopes will not be medically available for arraignment today," David Traub, a spokesman for the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office, said in a statement. |

Thai cave rescue divers given diplomatic immunity: report Posted: 15 Jul 2018 09:15 PM PDT Two Australian divers who helped extract the young football team trapped in a Thai cave obtained diplomatic immunity before the rescue in case it failed, national broadcaster ABC reported Monday. The "Wild Boars" team were stuck in the cave in northern Thailand for 18 days before Thai Navy SEALs and international cave diving experts successfully removed them in a highly risky, three-day-long operation. Anaesthetist Richard Harris and his diving partner Craig Challen, both cave diving specialists, played key roles in the rescue. |

Gazan security sources and residents said the strikes occurred in Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip and caused no injuries. |

The authorities have been concerned about the impact of sudden fame and media attention on the boys' mental health, so Wednesday's news conference will be carefully controlled. |

Texas executes convicted killer despite plea by victim's family Posted: 17 Jul 2018 04:54 PM PDT Texas executed a man on Tuesday for murdering a store owner during a robbery in 2004, despite calls from some relatives of the victim that his life be spared. Christopher Young, 34, was put to death by lethal injection at the state's death chamber in the city of Huntsville for the murder of Hasmukh Patel at his convenience store in San Antonio, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said. Young became the 13th U.S. inmate put to death this year, and the 553rd in Texas since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, the most of any state. |
