Palestinian protester hit in face by tear gas canister fired by Israeli soldier in Gaza protests Posted: 08 Jun 2018 06:16 AM PDT A Palestinian was on life support in a Gaza hospital on Friday after being struck in the face by a tear-gas canister fired by an Israeli soldier. Israel says it uses tear gas as a non-lethal measure against Gaza border protests. But the projectile, launched by a soldier on the Israeli side of the frontier, hit Haitham Abu Sabla in the face as he watched Palestinian stone-throwers taking part in demonstrations east of Khan Younis town, witnesses said. As seen in the picture above, the 23-year-old staggered back with the gas-spewing canister embedded in his cheek, his shirt bloodied, before collapsing. A Gaza hospital official said Abu Sabla was placed on life support after the canister was surgically removed. A Palestinian demonstrator uses a sling to hurl stones at Israeli troops during a protest marking al-Quds Day, (Jerusalem Day), at the Israel-Gaza border Credit: Reuters Reuters photographer Ibraheem Abu Mustafa, who took the picture, said: "An Israeli soldier came out of a military jeep and fired tear gas bombs ... and demonstrators began to run. They began to run further back and there was one of them who had gas coming out of his face. He ran before me directly. "I started taking photos of him as he ran, before he fell to the ground and medics rushed to help him. It looked scary, a man with smoke and gas coming from inside his face," he said. An Israeli army spokesman had no immediate comment on Abu Sabla's injury. He referred instead to an earlier statement that said troops were using what force was required to prevent around 10,000 Palestinians from posing an armed infiltration threat. Abu Sabla's older brother, Mahmoud, said they were both regulars at the protests against Israel launched on March 30 and in which the army has killed at least 123 Palestinians, according to Gaza medics. "It was a must-go for us. We've never missed a Friday," he said. Four Palestinians died in the protests on Friday, including a 15-year-old boy, and hundreds were injured - among them an Agence France Presse photographer - by tear gas or live fire fired by Israel soldiers at the Gaza border. Israel said militants had attacked its forces with guns and grenades. Palestinian demonstrators run for cover from tear gas fired by Israeli troops Credit: Reuters Over 115 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during the near-weekly demonstrations that have been happening since March 30. Protests led by the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza are fueled by frustration over a decade-old Israel-Egyptian blockade, imposed after Hamas seized control there. Organisers had urged Gaza residents to head to the perimeter fence with Israel for the latest in a series of protests. The call was issued through mosques and loudspeakers mounted on cars that toured Gaza neighborhoods on Friday. |

Investigators say Tesla Autopilot sped up before fatal Model X crash Posted: 07 Jun 2018 09:24 AM PDT Federal investigators said Thursday that a Tesla Model X traveling on Autopilot in California sped up before crashing into an highway barrier, killing its driver and striking two other cars. A preliminary report was made available by the National Transportation Safety Board detailing the moments before and after the March crash near Mountain View, California. In that report, investigators said the car's Autopilot system actually increased speed in the moments leading up to the crash and didn't attempt to brake or steer clear of the barrier. |

The breaches took place in January and February, the officials told the Post, speaking on condition of anonymity about an ongoing investigation led by the Navy and assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Protesters said they achieved their goals of shutting down Québec City after the legislature was closed down on Friday and many businesses decided to shut their doors. |

Taiwan conducting war games simulating repelling Chinese attack amid heighted tensions Posted: 07 Jun 2018 01:18 AM PDT Fighter jets, helicopters and thousands of troops in Taiwan fought back a simulated Chinese invasion Thursday as the self-ruled island faces increasing military and diplomatic pressure from Beijing. Relations between Taipei and Beijing have deteriorated since President Tsai Ing-wen was elected in 2016, as her government refuses to acknowledge that Taiwan is part of "one China". Live-fire drills began Monday with troops simulating surprise air and coastal assaults to reflect increased military threats from China, which sees Taiwan as a renegade province to be brought back into the fold - by force if necessary. Tsai watched Thursday's session of the ongoing "Han Kuang" (Han Glory) exercise involving 4,100 soldiers, attack helicopters and fighter jets from an air base in Taichung. Thursday's scenario simulated the enemy bombing of an airfield and a paratrooper attack, with air and ground troops deployed to take back the base. Special operations troops were seen moving to secure a building. "I have seen our troops' capabilities and I have faith that our troops can achieve the goal of 'solid defence and multiple deterrence'," Tsai said. China held its own live-fire drills in April in the Taiwan Strait - the narrow waterway separating the Chinese mainland from Taiwan - following weeks of air and naval manoeuvres in the area. Beijing has also stepped up diplomatic pressure on Taipei, luring four countries to switch allegiance from Taiwan to China since Tsai took office. China has been incensed by a recent warming in relations between Taiwan and the United States, which remains the island's most powerful ally and arms supplier even though it has no official diplomatic ties. President Donald Trump recently signed a symbolic bill paving the way for mutual visits by high-level officials and Washington gave long-awaited approval for a licence necessary to sell submarine technology to Taiwan. A defence spending bill currently before congress in Washington calls on the US military to participate in Taiwan's drills, including the annual Han Kuang exercise. "We are optimistic about all exchanges with the US as long as it's about national security, and regional peace and stability," defence ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi said when asked to comment on American participation in Taiwan's drills. On Monday, the pilot of an F-16 jet involved in the drills was killed after crashing into a mountain in northern Taiwan. The cause of the incident was under investigation. |

"Razan al-Najjar was not an angel of mercy as Hamas is trying to market her," Ofir Gendelman, the Arabic-language spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said in a tweet. |
