DNA shows first modern Briton had dark skin, blue eyes Posted: 06 Feb 2018 05:13 PM PST The first modern Briton had dark skin and blue eyes, London scientists said on Wednesday, following groundbreaking DNA analysis of the remains of a man who lived 10,000 years ago. Known as "Cheddar Man" after the area in southwest England where his skeleton was discovered in a cave in 1903, the ancient man has been brought to life through the first ever full DNA analysis of his remains. In a joint project between Britain's Natural History Museum and University College London, scientists drilled a 2mm hole into the skull and extracted bone powder for analysis. |

Former Pope Benedict XVI says he is increasingly frail and in last phase of his life Posted: 07 Feb 2018 03:52 AM PST In a rare public statement, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has said that he is becoming increasingly frail but is at peace with the prospect of death. Benedict became the first Pope in 600 years to resign from the Seat of St Peter when he stepped down in February 2013. His papacy was dogged by a series of crises and controversies on issues ranging from the widespread abuse of children by Catholic priests to the Church's attitudes to Islam and homosexuality. The 90-year-old wrote a letter to Corriere della Sera, one of Italy's leading dailies, in response to queries from readers as to his health and state of mind. The letter, marked "urgent, by hand" was delivered to the newspaper's offices in Rome from Benedict's home – "Mater Ecclesiae monastery, V-120, Vatican City." He was deeply moved that "so many readers want to know how I am spending this last period of my life," he wrote in the letter, which the newspaper printed on its front page on Wednesday. Pope Benedict XVI resigned in 2013 - the first Pope to do so in 600 years. Credit: AP "I can only say that with the slow waning of my physical forces, I'm on a pilgrimage towards home. "It is a great gift for me to be surrounded, on this last stretch of this sometimes tiring road, by a degree of love and goodwill that I could never have imagined." He wrote the letter as the fifth anniversary of his historic resignation approaches. Benedict stunned the world, including the Roman Catholic Church and his closest confidantes within the Vatican, when he unexpectedly announced his intention to resign. He made the announcement during a gathering of cardinals in the Vatican, choosing to deliver the bombshell in Latin. Many of the cardinals did not immediately understand what he had said, but the news was picked up by a sharp-eared correspondent from an Italian news agency, who happened to be well versed in Latin and landed herself a worldwide scoop. Since then he has been living in a former monastery within the walls of the Vatican, a few hundred yards from where Pope Francis lives. Benedict has appeared frail and thin during his few public appearances over the last couple of years, although aides say he has lost none of his mental acuity. Pope Francis, his successor, was elected like all popes during a secret conclave of cardinals who gathered in the Sistine Chapel. He is the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years, the first Jesuit Pope and the first from the Americas. |

Elon Musk shares the last image of his Tesla roadster floating through the solar system Posted: 07 Feb 2018 03:01 PM PST Unless you spent your day under a rock on Tuesday, you probably already know that SpaceX successfully launched its largest rocket ever, the Falcon Heavy. Oh, and on that rocket was a Telsa Roadster, because why not? Elon Musk shared the last image of the Roadster — equipped with a "Starman" at the wheel — before it spends the rest of eternity somewhere in space. Kind of haunting, kind of beautiful. May he ride forever, and not be blown to bits. SEE ALSO: Watching SpaceX's Falcon Heavy launch to space was like seeing into the future Last pic of Starman in Roadster on its journey to Mars orbit and then the Asteroid Belt A post shared by Elon Musk (@elonmusk) on Feb 7, 2018 at 2:00pm PST On Tuesday night Musk tweeted that the Falcon Heavy's payload "exceeded Mars orbit and kept going to the asteroid belt." Watch: Justin Trudeau urges woman who uses ‘mankind’ to say ‘peoplekind’ instead Posted: 06 Feb 2018 12:54 PM PST Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, interrupted a woman who said the phrase "mankind" and suggested "peoplekind" should be used instead. The comment came as Mr Trudeau took questions during a visit to the Ewan University in Edmonton, Canada, on Thursday. A young woman from the World Mission Society Church of God, a controversial feminist church founded in South Korea, asked a question from the audience. She said: "We have received the Queen's Award in the UK, we have received many awards. "We have received many awards, however, unfortunately in Canada, our volunteering as a religious charitable organization is extremely difficult. "We came here today to ask you to also look into the policies that religious charitable organizations have in our legislations so that it can also be changed because maternal love is the love that's going to change the future of mankind." Mr Trudeau interrupted to say: "We like to say peoplekind, not necessarily mankind 'cause it's more inclusive." The comment triggered mockery on social media as users accused Mr Trudeau of "mansplaining" - condescendingly explaining something to a woman. It comes days after Canadian politicians voted to make its national anthem gender neutral after a lengthy campaign from equality activists. The line "in all thy sons command" will become "in all of us command" in the English-language version of its national song, O Canada. |

How America Could Accidentally Push Russia into a Nuclear War Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:55 PM PST America runs the risk of misunderstanding the context within which the Russian government would use its nuclear weapons. The Trump administration's Nuclear Posture Review calls for expanding nuclear options to include low-yield nuclear weapons. While there may be any number of good reasons for these force-structure adjustments, the proximate cause appears to be a desire to deter the Russian government from what many in Washington believe to be a lowered nuclear threshold. |

South Africa's Zuma ready to quit if conditions met says news service Posted: 06 Feb 2018 01:57 PM PST By James Macharia JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's ruling African National Congress party on Tuesday put off a key meeting due to discuss President Jacob Zuma's future later this week, while an online news service quoted sources saying he was ready to quit if certain conditions were met. The ANC had called a special meeting of its executive committee for Wednesday in Cape Town, heralding what could be a new bid to unseat the 75-year-old president who is beset by corruption allegations and damaged by decline in the economy. Zuma has been in a weakened position since he was replaced as leader of the ANC by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa in December. |

Erdogan says U.S. has 'calculations' against Turkey, Iran, Russia in Syria Posted: 06 Feb 2018 02:12 AM PST The United States is working against the interests of Turkey, Iran and maybe Russia in northern Syria, where it is sending in military supplies to an area controlled by Kurdish-dominated forces, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday. "If the United States says they are sending 5,000 trucks and 2,000 cargo planes of weapons for the fight against Daesh (Islamic State), we don't believe this," Erdogan told members of his ruling AK Party in parliament. |
