The mother claims their father, John Coltharp, is a "doomsday prepper" who belongs to a fundamentalist Mormon sect. Yemen rebel alliance crumbles as 'street war' rocks capital Posted: 03 Dec 2017 08:33 PM PST Gun battles forced shops and schools to close in Yemen's capital on Sunday as residents warned a three-year rebel alliance was collapsing into a "street war" which has left dozens dead in the city. The Iran-backed Huthi rebels' partnership with powerful ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh fell apart after he reached out to a Saudi-led coalition fighting the insurgents. Referring to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the war-ravaged country, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday reiterated calls for a ceasefire in Yemen, where he is "deeply concerned about the sharp escalation of armed clashes" over the past several days, his spokesman said. |
Now, That's Deep! Mariana Trench Fish Lives 5 Miles Down Posted: 04 Dec 2017 12:28 PM PST But a deceptively vulnerable-looking fish is not only right at home in the very deepest ocean environment on Earth — where few creatures can survive — it's also one of the region's top predators. Dubbed the Mariana snailfish, it swims in the Mariana Trench near Guam, at a depth of about 26,200 feet (8,000 meters). The snailfish's small, pink and scaleless body hardly seems capable of surviving in such a punishing environment, but this fish is full of surprises, researchers reported in a new study. |

Pentagon signals open-ended troop commitment in Syria Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:11 PM PST The US military plans on staying in Syria as long as necessary to ensure the Islamic State group does not return, a Pentagon official told AFP on Tuesday, as the fight against the jihadists winds down. "We are going to maintain our commitment on the ground as long as we need to -- to support our partners and prevent the return of terrorist groups," Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said. The United States currently has approximately 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria, where they have been helping train and advise Kurdish and Arab partner forces in the fight against IS. |
Arctic sea ice melt to exacerbate California droughts: study Posted: 05 Dec 2017 02:03 AM PST By Timothy Gardner WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Melting Arctic sea ice could render sun-soaked California vulnerable to a recurrence of the severe drought suffered in recent years as it is likely to cause high pressure systems that push away rain-bearing storms, a study released on Tuesday said. As temperatures rise, the Arctic Ocean is expected to become ice-free within two or three decades, resulting in more of the sun's heat being stored in the Arctic Ocean, leading to atmospheric circulation changes and cloud formations in the tropical Pacific that move north. "This has the potential to make a drought very similar to the one we had in 2012 to 2016," said Ivana Cvijanovic, an atmospheric scientist at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. |
Why the World Should Fear North Korea's Type 73 Machine Gun Posted: 05 Dec 2017 10:39 AM PST Not surprisingly, many of the machine guns ended up with other armed factions, including Christian Babylon Brigades, according to Armament Research Services, another independent monitoring organization. It is entirely possible that many of the weapons changed hands more than once in the fighting with Islamic State terrorists. By March 2016, Type 73s had spread to Syria and Yemen. |

The Best Baked Brie Recipes On Planet Earth Posted: 05 Dec 2017 02:46 AM PST There are many reasons we love brie. This French cheese is soft, buttery and mild enough to go with pretty much anything. It's a mellow partner for super savory flavors and an even better match for sweet ones. Perhaps our favorite thing about brie, however, is how incredible it becomes when it's baked. Easy to make and good for a crowd, baked brie recipes are perfect for holiday parties, cold-weather snacking or just keeping your crackers company. |

According to Afghan intelligence services, and a spokesman for US forces in Kabul, "Omar Khetab, number two in the al-Qaeda network for the Indian subcontinent" was killed on Monday. "He was directly involved in fighting against the Afghan government and foreign troops and had a role in advising in the use of heavy weapons such as rockets, mortars and training for Taliban night attacks," the US command's statement added. |

U.S. defense chief urges Pakistan to redouble efforts against militants Posted: 04 Dec 2017 01:28 PM PST By Idrees Ali ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis met Pakistan's civilian and military leaders on Monday and urged them to "redouble" their efforts to rein in militants accused of using the country as a base to carry out attacks in neighboring Afghanistan. Mattis, on a one-day visit to Pakistan, said the South Asian nation had made progress in the fight against militancy inside its borders but needed to make more. More than 100 days since U.S. President Donald Trump announced a South Asia strategy that calls for a firmer line toward Islamabad, U.S. officials and analysts say there has been only limited success and it is not clear how progress will be made. |
