Man wants to thank good Samaritans that saved him during the Las Vegas shooting Posted: 04 Oct 2017 10:02 AM PDT Jeffrey Koishor, 25, took his first steps after sustaining two gunshot wounds to his leg and hip during the nightmarish Las Vegas shooting earlier this week. As the bullets began to rain down on the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino hotel room where shooter Stephen Paddock was holed up, Koishor immediately shielded his girlfriend from the spray. "I was running on my right leg for about 50 yards until I got to the House of Blues bar where it had a covered roof," Koishor said. |

Trump administration backpedals on citizenship for 'Dreamers' Posted: 03 Oct 2017 03:33 PM PDT By Yeganeh Torbati and Richard Cowan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. official told Congress on Tuesday it would be "rational" to legislate a path for citizenship for illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children, but within hours the administration backtracked, saying his comments did not state the views of President Donald Trump. The Trump administration last month ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, which began in 2012 under former President Barack Obama. |

Head of Syria ex-Qaeda group 'critical' after Russia strike Posted: 04 Oct 2017 01:07 PM PDT Defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the strike was the result of a special operation to avenge an attack on Russian military police in the so-called Idlib de-escalation zone in Syria on September 18. "As a result of the strike, the leader of Jabhat al-Nusra Abu Mohammed al-Jolani received multiple serious shrapnel wounds, lost an arm and is in a critical condition, according to several independent sources," Konashenkov said in a statement. |

Ohio court overturns death sentence for convicted murderer, orders new trial Posted: 04 Oct 2017 12:27 PM PDT A divided Ohio Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned the death sentence of a man convicted of murdering a female bartender and ordered a new trial, saying prosecutors erred in showing jurors knives not used in the crime that the man owned. The 4-3 ruling sends the case of defendant Joseph Thomas back to Lake County for a new trial. Thomas, 33, of Perry Township, in northeast Ohio, was convicted in 2012 for the kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder of bartender Anne McSween, 49, which occurred two years earlier in Mentor-on-the-Lake, located about 30 miles east of Cleveland. |

Archaeologists in Turkey believe they have discovered Santa Claus's tomb Posted: 04 Oct 2017 04:37 AM PDT Archaeologists in Turkey have made a discovery which could settle a century-old debate … and disappoint millions of children around the world. They have unearthed what they say is likely the tomb of the original Santa Claus, or Saint Nicholas, beneath an ancient church in Demre, southern Turkey. Demre, previously known as Myra, in Antalya province, is believed to be the birthplace of the 4th century bishop. Cemil Karabayram, the head of Antalya's Monument Authority, said the shrine was discovered during electronic surveys that showed gaps beneath the church. "We believe this shrine has not been damaged at all, but it is quite difficult to get to it as there are mosaics on the floor," Mr Karabayram told the Turkish Hurriyet Daily News. He said he is very optimistic about uncovering Saint Nicholas's remains, but warned it will take some time to scale each tile one by one and remove them as a whole in a mold. Turkish experts claim that what was believed to be the original grave of Saint Nicholas (pictured) was in fact the grave of an anonymous priest. Credit: Creative Commons "We have obtained very good results but the real work starts now," he said, adding that the temple is almost fully intact but currently inaccessible due to the presence of stone reliefs that need to be preserved. "We will reach the ground and maybe we will find the untouched body of Saint Nicholas." Professor Sema Dogan, excavation leader, was stunned by the finding and believes the discovery could boost tourism to the area. At the time of his death in 343 A.D., Saint Nicholas was interred at the church in Demre, where he lay undisturbed until the 11th century. Previously, the remains were believed to have then been smuggled to the Italian city of Bari by merchants in the year 1087. Christians visit the site of what was thought to be his final resting place in Bari's Basilica di San Nicola. However, Turkish experts are now claiming the wrong bones were removed and those taken abroad belong to another, local priest, rather than the legendary bishop. Christmas myth | Santa Claus is American Saint Nicholas of Myra was known for his generosity towards children. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, a practice celebrated on his feast day, December 6. He was popularised in 16th century Europe as Father Christmas, who gave presents to young children. Dutch arrivals to the United States called their version of Saint Nicholas "Sinterklaas," which later became Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas is depicted in modern images as a portly old man sporting a big white beard and spectacles. |

Russia accuses US-led forces of 'bloody provocations' in Syria Posted: 03 Oct 2017 11:54 PM PDT Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov accused US-led forces of carrying out "bloody provocations" against Russian troops in Syria in an interview published by the Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq al-Awsat on Wednesday. "The activities of US-led forces raise many questions... In some cases, these forces have indirectly encouraged other terrorists to attack strategic positions rightfully regained by Damascus, or they have deliberately engaged in bloody provocations against our forces," Lavrov said. The Russian foreign minister appeared to be referring to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which the US-led coalition is backing in a drive against Islamic State jihadists in eastern Syria, mainly in the city of Raqqa. |
Nigeria anti-graft agency rejects ex-first lady's 'witch-hunt' accusation Posted: 04 Oct 2017 08:17 AM PDT Nigeria's financial crimes agency on Wednesday brushed off allegations by the wife of the country's former president that it had conducted a "witch-hunt" against her. Patience Jonathan, whose husband Goodluck Jonathan was the president of Africa's most populous country from 2010 to 2015, accused the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of an "orchestrated plan" to tarnish her reputation and that of her husband. President Muhammadu Buhari took office in 2015 after defeating Goodluck Jonathan in elections during which he vowed to crack down on corruption. |

Cigna to end OxyContin painkiller coverage, signs contract for alternative Posted: 04 Oct 2017 03:40 PM PDT Amid a growing U.S. opioid addiction, health insurer Cigna Corp will stop covering OxyContin, the opioid painkiller sold by Purdue Pharma LP, as of Jan. 1 and will instead cover an equivalent with a formulation less vulnerable to abuse, the company said on Wednesday. The insurer has signed a "value-based contract" with Collegium Pharmaceutical Inc for Xtampza ER, an extended-release oxycodone equivalent that cannot be made more fast-acting through cutting or crushing. Under the contract, Collegium will reduce the cost of the medication for many of Cigna's benefit plans. |
