'Idiots of the century' swim in baited croc trap Posted: 23 Oct 2017 06:52 PM PDT A group of men seen swimming inside a baited crocodile trap in Australia near where a woman was recently eaten were blasted as "idiots of the century" Tuesday. Photos posted on Facebook showed the four men clambering on the floating trap set near a marina at Port Douglas in northern Queensland state and even posing inside it. It is not far from where a 4.3-metre (14-foot) croc killed dementia sufferer Anne Cameron. |

Stolen dog missing for three years found 1,700 miles away Posted: 25 Oct 2017 03:58 AM PDT A missing dog has finally been returned to its rightful owner, three years after it was stolen and taken 1,700 miles away. Staffordshire Terrier Ladybird was taken from a resident at a Texas living facility by a homeless man after she passed away. The woman had already asked her friend, Sharon Henderson, to look after Ladybird in the event of her death. She told Fox 7 Austin: "The neighbour in the living facility called this other homeless guy and he came and took Ladybird in the middle of the night knowing that her wishes were that he now have her." The man hitchhiked with the dog all the way to Portland, Oregon, with Ms Henderson adding that the "whole trip must have been horrendous for her". Three years later, a malnourished Ladybird was found wandering the streets alone following the death of the man who took her. The canine was in a terrible condition, with Ms Henderson explaining: "She hadn't eaten in so long, so had no jaw muscles, her head muscles had atrophied and she couldn't even chew. Her ribs were sticking out and she couldn't even go up two stairs with falling backwards." Ladybird was eventually reunited with her rightful owner thanks to the address stored on her microchip. "I want her to enjoy the rest of her life in the lap of luxury she's never known and have a family," her owner said. Smiling dog faces losing new home after adoption selfie alerts police |

Troops describe hardships, wounds during Bergdahl searches Posted: 25 Oct 2017 01:22 PM PDT FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — Several soldiers and a Navy SEAL testified Wednesday about the risky, all-out efforts to find Bowe Bergdahl after the soldier's 2009 disappearance in Afghanistan. Troops and commanders went without sleep. Shirts and socks disintegrated on soldiers during weekslong patrols. And several service members were seriously wounded — including the Navy commando whose career was ended by AK-47 fire. |

U.S. committee recommends GSK shingles vaccine over Merck rival Posted: 25 Oct 2017 10:28 AM PDT The committee responsible for U.S. vaccination schedules has given a preferential recommendation to GlaxoSmithKline's newly approved shingles vaccine Shingrix over Merck & Co's established product Zostavax. The backing from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) follows evidence from clinical trials that Shingrix is significantly more effective than Zostavax, the only currently available shingles prevention vaccine. ACIP members also recommended that Shingrix should be given routinely to Americans aged over 50 years, compared with 60 years for Zostavax, and they supported revaccination of people who previously received Zostavax. |

Posted: 24 Oct 2017 02:17 PM PDT Democrats have denounced as a "massive diversion" from the Trump administration's alleged links to Russia, a decision by Republicans to launch investigations into the FBI's handling of a probe into Hillary Clinton. The Republican chairmen of two House committees said they would jointly investigate the Department of Justice's handling of a 2016 inquiry into Ms Clinton's use of a private email server. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, said they had many questions about the way Ms Clinton dealt with classified information. |

Tokyo concept car aims to fend off dents with external airbags Posted: 25 Oct 2017 06:04 AM PDT A concept car equipped with external airbags to protect against fender benders is raising eyebrows at the Tokyo Motor Show. The body panels of the Flesby II ultra-compact vehicle are covered by a soft, next-generation rubber that can absorb the impact of a collision. "We put airbags, which are mainly employed inside the car, on its exterior, such as its hood or fender, to protect the entire body," Takashi Ishikawa, managing officer of Toyoda Gosei Co, said on Wednesday. |
Kurds offer to freeze independence vote to end conflict with Iraq Posted: 25 Oct 2017 01:04 AM PDT The Kurdistan Regional Government has offered to suspend its drive for independence in return for a promise from Iraq to halt its military activity, which has seen it seize huge swathes of territory in recent days. The KRG said it was prepared to "freeze" the results of its September referendum and proposed a ceasefire to prevent further violence, which has so far seen scores killed and tens of thousands displaced. "As Iraq and Kurdistan are faced with grave and dangerous circumstances, we are all obliged to act responsibly in order to prevent further violence and clashes between Iraqi and Peshmerga forces," the KRG's statement said. They called for dialogue with Baghdad in the hope of easing escalating tensions. At a glance | The four Kurdistans The KRG made the offer as Iraqi forces looked on Tuesday to be moving in on its border with Turkey, which is currently in Kurdish hands. Its loss to Baghdad would be devastating for Kurdistan's autonomy and economic independence. The offer to suspend the result of the referendum on secession - which won the support of 93 per cent of voters - is a humiliating blow for Kurdistan's President Masoud Barzani, who defied international pressure to hold the vote. Iraq's Kurds were last month celebrating their symbolic victory as a historic step toward their decades-old dream of statehood. But by last week they had lost almost all the territory they had gained from Iraqi forces in recent years which lay outside their long-standing three-province autonomous region in the north. There was no immediate reaction from Baghdad to Wednesday's offer but the Hashed al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilisation) force, whose mainly Iran-trained Shia paramilitaries played a major role in the operation against the Kurds, said a freeze did not go far enough. The United Nations said that it stands ready to broker talks. Jan Kubis, UN envoy, "expressed confidence that despite the recent tensions, Iraq will be able to ride this crisis". "Both sides publicly expressed their willingness to engage in dialogue and negotiations on the basis of the Constitution. The UN is ready to assist, if requested," he said. |

3 Residency Factors When Considering International Medical Schools Posted: 24 Oct 2017 06:30 AM PDT American premedical students may consider attending medical school overseas for a number of reasons, including more affordable tuition in certain countries, the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture and more flexible entrance requirements in some countries compared with U.S. medical schools. Earning a medical degree outside the U.S. could lead to challenges with securing a residency placement. Here are three residency factors to keep in mind when considering international medical schools. |

German president tells Putin: we need to work on our relationship Posted: 25 Oct 2017 07:24 AM PDT German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday he was unhappy about the state of relations between Moscow and Berlin and that both sides needed to work to improve it. The first visit to Russia by a German president since 2010 happened as relations remain strained over Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and a pro-Russian separatist uprising in eastern Ukraine, as well as German accusations of Russian meddling in its politics, something Moscow denies. "It's essential that we use this opportunity for us as presidents to continue our dialogue to try to improve our bilateral relations, the state of which we can't be happy about," Steinmeier told Putin at the start of talks. |

Senator announces exit, says won't be 'complicit' with Trump Posted: 24 Oct 2017 01:46 PM PDT A senator from Donald Trump's Republican Party unleashed a powerful attack on the US leader Tuesday as he announced he would not seek re-election, telling Senate colleagues he "will not be complicit" with a "reckless" presidency. Jeff Flake, of Arizona, assailed Trump in a bombshell 17-minute speech on the Senate floor, hours after the president made what was meant to be a bridge-building trip to the Capitol to drum up support for his tax reform plans. Flake, who has served in the Senate since 2013 and has been an outspoken critic of Trump-era politics, displayed visible emotion, his voice repeatedly breaking, as he announced he would not run for office again next year. |
Could America's New Tanks Beat Russia's Armata Tank in Battle? Posted: 25 Oct 2017 05:04 AM PDT Who wins? Could America's New Tanks Beat Russia's Armata Tank in Battle? Army and industry weapons developers have begun work on an advanced next-generation Abrams tank specifically engineered with new weapons, ammunition, laser-spotters and advanced thermal sights able to outrange, outgun and outmatch the most modern Russian and Chinese tanks, service and industry officials said. Advanced networking technology with new, next-generation sights, sensors, targeting systems and digital networking - are all key elements of an ongoing upgrade to position the platform to, if needed, successfully engage in combat against rapidly emerging threats, such as the prospect of confronting a Russian T-14 Armata or Chinese 3rd generation Type 99 tank. |
