Sanctions doubts grow as North Korea warns of 'gift packages' for U.S. Posted: 05 Sep 2017 02:25 PM PDT By Stephanie Nebehay and Christine Kim GENEVA/SEOUL (Reuters) - A top North Korean diplomat on Tuesday warned that his country is ready to send "more gift packages" to the United States as world powers struggled for a response to Pyongyang's latest nuclear weapons test. Han Tae Song, ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, confirmed that North Korea had successfully conducted its sixth and largest nuclear bomb test on Sunday. "The recent self-defense measures by my country, DPRK, are a gift package addressed to none other than the U.S.," Han told a disarmament conference, using the acronym for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the country's formal name. |
Hunter tries to shoot grizzly bear, bear knocks gun out of his hand and badly mauls him Posted: 06 Sep 2017 05:32 AM PDT A hunter was mauled by a grizzly bear after the animal swatted his pistol away as he tried to shoot it in the neck. Tom Sommer said he could "hear bones crunching" as the bear bit his thigh and slashed his head during the attack in the US state of Montana. The 57-year-old and his hunting partner used a type of pepper spray to defend themselves against the charging bear after disturbing it as it feeding on an elk during a hunting trip in the Beaverhead-Deelodge National Forest. |

Scenes of destruction from Irma began to trickle in Posted: 06 Sep 2017 11:15 AM PDT While the Florida and Atlantic Coasts anxiously prepare for monstrous Hurricane Irma to decide where it will make landfall this weekend, the storm's currently buzzsawing across the Caribbean, leaving a trail of unfathomable destruction. SEE ALSO: Historic Hurricane Irma taking a buzzsaw to Caribbean as threat grows for Puerto Rico, Florida On Wednesday, Irma rolled across small islands like Anguilla and Saint Martin as it continued to spin onward toward the U.S. and British Virgin Islands as well as Puerto Rico. In fact, Irma's eye was so well-defined — a sign that underscores the storm's strength — that the islands of Anguilla and Saint Martin could be seen on satellite imagery in the middle of the eye. In St. Martin, several government buildings considered among the island's sturdiest were leveled. #BREAKING: French interior minister says "4 most solid" govt buildings on St Martin already destroyed by #Irma. Comms with Paris are down — Patrick Galey (@patrickgaley) September 6, 2017 But photos and video told the real story—visceral images of Irma's destructive power, like the one below taken at the famous Maho Beach where tourists gather to watch planes fly extremely low to complete their descent and landing at the adjacent St. Maarten Airport. Debt, sanctions and disrepair: Venezuela's oil sector in agony Posted: 05 Sep 2017 09:38 AM PDT After decades of being Venezuela's cash cow, the state oil company PDVSA is a ragged shadow of its former self: overburdened, underfed, and in hock to Russian and Chinese creditors. The woes of the group, whose full name is Petroleos de Venezuela S.A., look set to worsen because of US sanctions imposed last month restricting its access to credit. Oil production keeps declining and much of what is exported goes to repay billions of dollars in loans. |

Russia fires missiles near enclave besieged by IS Posted: 05 Sep 2017 03:44 AM PDT A Russian warship on Tuesday fired cruise missiles from the Mediterranean at the Islamic State group near the Syrian city of Deir Ezzor where regime forces are battling the jihadists, Moscow said. The Russian defence ministry said the strike, which was carried out by the frigate "Admiral Essen," hit IS targets near the town of Al-Shula, which were controlled by fighters from Russia and other post-Soviet nations. "The launch of the Kalibr cruise missiles has ensured the continued success of the advance by Syrian government troops and helped thwart plans of IS militants to regroup and reinforce the positions of terrorists in the vicinity of the city of Deir Ezzor," the ministry said. |

Special Report: Behind the scenes, Zimbabwe politicians plot post-Mugabe reforms Posted: 05 Sep 2017 03:17 AM PDT By Joe Brock and Ed Cropley HARARE/JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - In January, a photograph appeared in Zimbabwe's media showing Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa enjoying drinks with a friend. In his hand was a large novelty mug emblazoned with the words: "I'M THE BOSS." To supporters of President Robert Mugabe, the inscription bordered on treason. According to politicians, diplomats and a trove of hundreds of documents from inside Zimbabwe's Central Intelligence Organization (CIO) reviewed by Reuters, Mnangagwa and other political players have been positioning themselves for the day Mugabe either steps down or dies. |
California officers accused of 'sadistic and terrorizing acts' against prisoners Posted: 05 Sep 2017 04:08 PM PDT Four sheriff's deputies have been arrested amid allegations they committed 'terrorizing' acts against prisoners. Four California sheriff's deputies have been accused of "sadistic and terrorizing acts" against inmates, including encouraging prisoners to throw urine and feces at each other, laughing at an assault victim seeking help, strangling an inmate into unconsciousness and intimidating witnesses. The felony assault charges against four Alameda County deputies, accused of victimizing eight prisoners, have provided a window into the violent abuse and misconduct that prisoners' rights activists say is still commonplace in some jails across the country, including in progressive regions that have pledged reforms. |
