British boy Julian Cadman was killed in Barcelona attack, family confirms Posted: 20 Aug 2017 07:30 AM PDT The grieving family of Julian Cadman, the British boy killed in the Barcelona terror attack, said they will never forget his smiles. The seven-year-old was in the Spanish city with his mother, Jumarie Cadman, to attend a family wedding when they were hit by a rented van as it careered down Las Ramblas, killing 13 and injuring more than 100. Mrs Cadman was seriously injured and in a coma, as of Sunday morning, unaware of her son's death, a senior Catalan Government source told the Telegraph. Julian Cadman, seven, who was killed in the Barcelona terror attack Julian's family confirmed he had been killed in a statement released on Sunday, saying: "Julian was a much loved and adored member of our family. "As he was enjoying the sights of Barcelona with his mother, Julian was sadly taken from us. "He was so energetic, funny and cheeky, always bringing a smile to our faces. "We are so blessed to have had him in our lives and will remember his smiles and hold his memory dear to our hearts." The family thanked those who helped search for Julian in the immediate aftermath of the attack, adding: "Your kindness was incredible during a difficult time. "We also acknowledge we are not the only family to be affected by the events, our prayers and thoughts are with all people affected." It took several days to formally identify Julian's body because DNA confirmation was required, the government source said. Andrew Cadman, the boy's father, heard the news of the attack on the radio last week and on discovering that his son was missing, immediately flew from Sydney to Barcelona, arriving in the early hours of Saturday morning. It is believed he was taken straight to the Ciutat de la Justicia, where victims of the Las Ramblas terror attack were being identified by forensic experts. He was then taken, with a police escort, to the Vall d'Hebron hospital where his wife, who sustained severe injuries, underwent surgery. Mapped: Barcelona van attack Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, said: "I send my sincerest sympathies to the family of Julian Cadman and all those who loved him. His death is a tragedy." Julian was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and lived in the UK for four years, attending Chiddingstone Nursery, set in a castle in the countryside, before the family-of-three moved to Australia three years ago. They return to the UK once a year to visit Mrs Cadman's older sister, Judith, whose daughter Justine's wedding the pair were attending in Barcelona. Julian's paternal grandfather, Tony Cadman, originally from Gillingham, had emigrated to Sydney decades earlier. The family had put out urgent appeals for information about Julian on social media that were removed from the internet on Saturday. Family member Debbie Cadman wrote on Facebook: "It is beyond words what we are experiencing at the moment. We appreciate all prayers and love." Terror in Spain: Dozens killed and injured in Barcelona and Cambrils A pharmacist who comforted Mrs Cadman in the immediate aftermath of the attack has described how she ignored her own as she begged for information about her son. Fouad Bakkali comforted Mrs Cadman as she lay on the floor of his Las Ramblas shop, waiting for paramedics. "I was with the mother, the Australian mother, until the doctor came,'' he said. "I was at her side helping her, telling her, 'be calm, don't worry.'' He said Mrs Cadman appeared to be suffering two broken legs, a back injury and had a large wound on her head. "She was asking all the time about her little boy. She asked me 'where is my son'. She told me he was seven years old,'' a Mr Bakkali added. "I told her, 'he is good, it will be OK.' "I helped to keep her breathing until the doctor's came." Barcelona attack key articles The Catalan interior department also confirmed the deaths of an Italian and a Belgian national in the Las Ramblas attack. Forensic doctors and police are still working to identify two remaining victims of the 13 killed. Those already named include Luca Rosso, a 35-year-old Italian on holiday with his fiancee, Bruno Gulotta, 35, an Italian father-of-two and Jared Tucker, 42, an American construction worker . Officials said 51 people injured in the attack remain in hospital while 81 have been discharged. The victims hailed from 34 countries including China, Colombia, France, Germany, Honduras and Morocco. |
Trump to lay out U.S. strategy for Afghanistan on Monday night Posted: 20 Aug 2017 04:10 PM PDT By Steve Holland and John Walcott BRIDGEWATER, N.J./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump will lay out his long-awaited U.S. strategy for the war in Afghanistan in a prime-time television address to the American people on Monday night, the White House said on Sunday, with a modest increase in U.S. troops possible. A White House statement said Trump's 9 p.m. (0100 GMT Tuesday) speech from Fort Myer, Virginia, near Washington, would "provide an update on the path forward for America's engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia." Trump will be making the third prime-time address of his seven-month-old presidency after a particularly bruising week in which he was widely criticized for blaming both white nationalists and counter-protesters for violence at a Virginia rally this month organized by neo-Nazis and white supremacists. |

US Navy cruiser USS Indianapolis found 18,000 feet deep in Pacific Ocean Posted: 20 Aug 2017 12:11 AM PDT Researchers have found the wreckage of the US warship Indianapolis, which was sunk by a Japanese torpedo in the final days of World War Two, more than 18,000 feet (5.5 kilometres) below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the Navy said on Saturday. USS Indianapolis Credit: The Telegraph/AP The cruiser was returning from its mission to deliver components for the atomic bomb that would soon be dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima when it was fired upon in the North Pacific Ocean by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945. It sunk in 12 minutes, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington. No distress signal was sent. About 800 of the 1,196 crew members aboard survived the sinking, but only 316 were rescued alive five days later, with the rest lost to exposure, dehydration, drowning and sharks. Circles on photo mark alterations to the ship Credit: REUTERS After a Navy historian unearthed new information in 2016 about the warship's last movements that pointed to a new search area, a team of civilian researchers led by Paul Allen, a Microsoft Corp co-founder, spent months searching in a 600-square-mile (1,500 sq km) patch of ocean. With a vessel rigged with equipment that can reach some of the deepest ocean floors, members of Allen's team found the wreckage somewhere in the Philippine Sea on Friday, Allen said in a statement on his website. The statement said the Navy had asked Allen to keep the precise location confidential. Wreckage of the USS Indianapolis, including the ship's bell Credit: Courtesy of Paul G. Allen Allen said that the discovery was a humbling experience and a means of honoring sailors he saw as playing a vital role in ending World War Two. "While our search for the rest of the wreckage will continue, I hope everyone connected to this historic ship will feel some measure of closure at this discovery so long in coming," he said. Identification was easier than in some deep-sea expeditions: some of the exposed wreck was clearly marked with Indianapolis signage, according to photographs shared by Allen and the Navy. Allen "It is exceedingly rare you find the name of the ship on a piece of the wreckage," Paul Taylor, a spokesman for the Naval History and Heritage Command, said in a telephone interview. "If that's not Indianapolis then I don't know what is." The Navy said it had plans to honor the 22 survivors from the Indianapolis still alive along with the families of the ship's crew. |

Syria's Assad says Western plots against him foiled but war not yet won Posted: 20 Aug 2017 07:09 AM PDT By Suleiman Al-Khalidi AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Sunday his country had foiled Western designs to topple him but his army had not yet won the fight to end Syria's six-year-old insurgency. In an televised address, Assad said that even though there were signs of victory after six-and-a-half years of civil war, the "battle continues, and where we go later and it becomes possible to talk about victory...that's a different matter". "Their direct support - politically, economically and militarily - has made possible bigger advances on the battlefield and reduced the losses and burdens of war," Assad added. |
Solar eclipse 2017: Watch live as the US goes dark - latest news and images Posted: 21 Aug 2017 07:51 AM PDT Total solar eclipse to cross US from 6:15pm (BST) to 7:49pm (BST) Partial eclipse will be seen in the UK Solar eclipse enthusiasts descend upon tiny town of Hopkinsville What time is the eclipse, where is it, plus the science behind it How to watch a solar eclipse safely Will the eclipse cause secret planet 'Nibiru' to destroy Earth next month? Millions of Americans armed with protective glasses are taking positions along a slender ribbon of land cutting diagonally across the United States to marvel at the first total solar eclipse to unfold from coast to coast in nearly a century. After weeks of anticipation, the sight of the moon's shadow passing directly in front of the sun, blotting out all but the halo-like solar corona, will draw one of the largest audiences in human history, experts say. When those watching via social and broadcast media are included, the spectacle will likely smash records. Some 12 million people live in the 70-mile-wide (113-km-wide), 2,500-mile-long (4,000-km-long) zone where the total eclipse will appear on Monday. Millions of others have traveled to spots along the route to bask in its full glory. Great American eclipse, in pictures The phenomenon will first appear at 10:15 a.m. PDT (6:15 BST) near Depoe Bay, Oregon. Some 94 minutes later, at 2:49 p.m. EDT (7:49 BST), totality will take its final bow near Charleston, South Carolina. The last time such a spectacle unfolded from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast was in 1918. The last total eclipse seen anywhere in the United States took place in 1979. For millions of others who can't get there, a partial eclipse of the sun will appear throughout North America if there is no local cloud cover. Perhaps never before have so many people had the opportunity to see a total eclipse, said Michael Zeiler, a self-described "eclipse chaser" who on Monday will notch his ninth time seeing "totality." Where and when to see the eclipse Weeks of publicity have fanned excitement,he said, and may have persuaded many families to make last-minute plans for a road trip to the zone. Zeiler, who runs GreatAmericanEclipse.com, a website devoted to the event, estimates that up to 7.4 million people with travel to the zone to observe the total eclipse, which takes place in the peak vacation month of August. Many people have trekked to remote national forests and parks of Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming, while others have bought tickets to watch the show en masse in a Carbondale, Illinois, football stadium, a two-hour drive southeast of St. Louis. What creates a total solar eclipse In South Carolina, Charleston County's more than 16,000 hotel rooms are booked, tourism officials say. Police expect up to 100,000 visitors to the area on Monday. Those who live along the path, which cuts through a few population centers like Kansas City and Nashville, Tennessee, can simply walk out their homes and look skyward. For all but the couple of minutes of totality, observers must wear specially designed solar-safe sunglasses or filters to avoid severe eye damage. It is never safe to gaze directly at a partial eclipse with the naked eye. Then as the years went by we realised how big an event it was going to be. He reports: As she served hundreds of "lunar lattes" in a coffee shop in the unusually chaotic rural Kentucky town of Hopkinsville, Amanda Huff-McClure kept a wary eye out the window. On the horizon several clouds loomed. A decade ago Hopkinsville, an otherwise little known former tobacco town, won the cosmic lottery. Nasa declared it would be the "point of greatest eclipse" as a 70-mile swathe of the United States, from Oregon to South Carolina, goes dark on Monday. It is the first total solar eclipse in the US since 1979 and Hopkinsville, or "Eclipseville USA", as it is now widely known, will experience an unrivaled 2 mins 41.2 secs of totality. The town has busily spent the last 10 years preparing to cash in like crazy, with up to 200,000 visitors set descend on it down a two-lane road. Vast quantities of "Total Eclipse Moonshine" with the slogan "Lights Out!" have been brewed. Homes are reputedly being rented out for $10,000, parking spots for $250. The economic boost for a town that needs it has been estimated at $30 million. Read the full dispatch here 12:04PM Where to see the eclipse if you're in America.. Three Lebanese soldiers killed in landmine on Syria border: security source Posted: 20 Aug 2017 11:17 AM PDT Three Lebanese soldiers were killed and one was critically wounded on Sunday when their armored vehicle hit a landmine on the Lebanese-Syrian border, a security source said. The area where the soldiers were killed was near a border stronghold close to the mountains of Arsal, where Shi'ite Hezbollah militia recently forced Sunni Syrian militants to leave in a joint cross-border operation with the Syrian army, the source added. The Lebanese army had launched an offensive on Saturday against an Islamic State enclave on the northeastern border with Syria. |
Millions pour into US towns in path of total eclipse Posted: 20 Aug 2017 10:26 PM PDT On Monday, when a total solar eclipse sweeps across the United States for the first time in 99 years, people gathering in Charleston, South Carolina, will be the last on the continent to experience it. Historic Charleston, with its cobblestone streets and elegant antebellum mansions, was a-bustle on Sunday in full pre-eclipse mode. Weather predictions for Monday were iffy -- with clouds and scattered thunderstorms predicted through the hours when the eclipse is due, from the moment when the moon first obscures a small arc of the sun, to totality, and through the end of the whole cosmic viewing experience. |

Barcelona attack suspect Younes Abouyaaqoub shot dead wearing suicide belt by Spanish police Posted: 21 Aug 2017 11:25 AM PDT The terrorist who went on the run after killing 14 people in Barcelona has been shot dead while wearing a fake suicide belt. Younes Abouyaaqoub was shot on Monday by armed police in the town of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia in the district of Subirats, around 30 miles west of Barcelona, bringing to an end a five-day international manhunt. The 22-year-old Moroccan reportedly shouted "Allahu akbar" as he was challenged by officers, leading to fears that he was about to launch a bomb attack. Police used a remote-controlled robot to check his body for explosives, but later confirmed that the suicide belt he was wearing was fake. Police: Suspect in Barcelona van attack shot dead 00:48 Abouyaaqoub was the last remaining member of the jihadist cell responsible for last week's twin terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils. Police now believe he was at the wheel of the van when it ploughed into crowds on Las Ramblas on Thursday afternoon, killing 13 people including Julian Cadman, a seven-year-old British boy. He then fled on foot, walking around Barcelona for 90 minutes before hijacking a car and killing its owner, 34-year-old aid worker Pablo Perez, in order to make his getaway. CCTV images emerged on Monday, appearing to show Abouyaaqoub starting to make his escape on foot through Barcelona's La Boqueria market after the attack. He then rammed the Ford Focus through a police checkpoint before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot. Site where Moroccan suspect Younes Abouyaaqoub was shot Credit: LUIS GENE/AFP/Getty Images Hours later, five of his associates launched a second attack in the coastal resort of Cambrils, in which a woman was stabbed to death and a police officer badly injured. All five terrorists were shot dead by police at the scene. There had been fears that Abouyaaqoub had fled across the border into France and might be preparing another terrorist outrage. But the Catalan police force was alerted shortly before 4.30pm local time, when a resident of Subirats spotted a man acting suspiciously in the street. She shouted to ask him what he was doing, causing him to run off towards a vineyard, where he was quickly challenged by armed officers. Roget Queral, an 18-year-old resident of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, said he believed he had seen Abouyaaqoub in the area before last week's attacks, leading to suggestions that he may have had a hideout in the town. Armed police officers stand guard near Subirats, Spain Credit: AP Photo/Emilio Morenatti Police were last night continuing to piece together the movements of the cell, which was based in the town of Ripoll, around 60 miles north of Barcelona in the foothills of the Pyerenees. It is now believed 40-year-old Abdelbaki Es Satty, the local imam, was responsible for radicalising the 12-strong Moroccan group. A former hashish smuggler, it is thought he became a jihadist after meeting one of the ringleaders of the Madrid train bombings while serving a four-year prison sentence in Valencia. After his release, he moved to Ripoll and began working at the local mosque as an imam. Barcelona attack map - 2108 The Spanish authorities have said they are almost certain Es Satty was one of two men who died in an explosion at a suspected bomb factory in the town of Alcanar last Tuesday. A man who survived the blast has been placed under arrest, and four other suspects, who were arrested in the wake of the attacks, also remain in custody. 7:11PM The tip-offs that led to his capture The chief of the Catalan police force, Major Josep Lluis Trapero, has explained that two different reports were received placing Abouyaacoub in the Subirats area, where he was eventually shot down. One was from two local police officers, who believed they saw a man looking like the suspect from their patrol car. At around the same time, a local woman called in saying she had "no doubt" that she had seen Abouyaacoub, who, she added, had been acting suspiciously near her home before running away into a vineyard. She said that her suspicion was confirmed by the fact that he was wearing a long-sleeved top on such a hot afternoon. Major Trapero described how police officers had approached Abouyaacoub in the vineyard he was crossing. He said that on being asked to stop and identify himself, the terrorist had lifted his shirt to show what appeared to be an explosive belt. Abouyaacoub then said "Allahu Akbar" before the officers shot him down. 6:49PM Peaceful location rocked by terror The mayoress of Sant Sadurni, Maria Rosell i Medall, said the situation was now under control, but that police were investigating every call they had received from residents to establish what had brought Abouyaaqoub to the area and whether he might have any local help. She said Sant Sadurni had always been "a safe and peaceful place" and that there had never been any indication to suggest any terrorist activity in the area. Police had been patrolling the area since the attacks, she said, and swung into action when they received the resident's call on Monday afternoon. 6:48PM Catalan President addresses reporters Catalan President Carles Puigdemont announced in a press conference that just before 5pm this afternoon the Catalan police had "shot down Younes Abouyaacoub, the perpetrator of the van attack in Barcelona last Thursday who had caused the death of 14 people". Mr Puigdemont said he had informed Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy personally of today's developments. He also expressed his "profound gratitude" to the Catalan police for their effective action, as well as that of all Catalan security forces. 6:27PM Abouyaaqoub's final days of hiding At 4.50pm on Thursday August 17, Younes Abouyaaqoub started his murderous rampage by driving a white Fiat rental van onto the pedestrianised central portion of Barcelona's famous La Rambla, accessing the northern end of the avenue via Pelai street. After weaving left and right for 500 metres, killing 13 people and injuring scores more, the airbag in the van's driver seat activated itself, stopping the vehicle in its tracks. Abouyaaqoub got out of the van and, was apparently filmed on CCTV images walking calmly away through the city's emblematic La Boqueria food market wearing a blue and white polo shirt, dark trousers, trainers and a pair of sunglasses. According to Catalonia's police chief, Major Josep Lluis Trapero, the 22-year-old Moroccan man then "walked and ran" six kilometres across the city in a westerly direction amidst the din of emergency sirens as ambulances transported the dead and injured to hospitals and the police mounted what they dubbed "Operation Cage" aimed at preventing terrorist suspects from escaping the city centre. At around 6.30pm, an hour and a half after the slaughter on La Rambla, Abouyaaqoub then came across Pau Pérez, a 34-year-old aid worker who was in his car in Barcelona's University Zone, just off the city's major El Diagonal traffic artery. According to the police's version of events, Abouyaaqoub stabbed Pérez several times and took the wheel of his white Ford Focus, shoving his victim's body into the back of the vehicle. Abouyaaqoub then drove through a police checkpoint on at the western end of El Diagonal, breaking an officer's leg. Police fired shots but the car was not stopped. The Ford Focus was later found abandoned some two miles further west in the Sant Just Desvern area, on the outskirts of Barcelona, with Mr Pérez's dead body inside. The police initially thought that the incident was not connected to the van attack on La Rambla, having identified the owner of the car as an unlikely terrorist suspect. When the autopsy revealed that Mr Pérez had been stabbed and not hit by a police bullet, investigators began to search for a link to the attacks. As, over the weekend, investigators untangled the web of the terrorist cell that had formed among young men of Moroccan origins in the small Pyrenean town of Ripoll, Abouyaaqoub was increasingly considered chief suspect of the van attack. Nothing is yet known about what Abouyaaqoub did during that time, except for the fact that he managed to travel some 25 miles west from the place in which he ditched the Ford Focus, possibly across mountainous terrain to the area in which police caught up with him at around 4.30pm on Monday afternoon. La Vanguardia has reported that Abouyaaqoub was located by the police after a woman in the Subirats area called in after seeing a man who looked like the chief suspect in the Barcelona van attack outside her home. The woman reportedly shouted at him and asked him what he was doing there, causing the suspect to run away into a vineyard. According to other unconfirmed reports, the woman said that Abouyaqoub had been whistling, as if trying to communicate with someone he had arranged to meet amongst nearby buildings. 6:00PM Locals say they recognised Abouyaaqoub Roget Queral, an 18-year-old resident of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, said he believed he had seen Younes Abouyaaqoub in the area before. He said that when the attacker's image appeared on the news, "I thought, goodness, I recognise him". Mr Queral said his father also believed he recognised him, as did a number of residents of the town. Mr Queral said he could not be certain it was the same man, but believed he had seen him in Sant Sadurni two or three months ago. Despite the rural location, a stranger would not necessarily attract attention as it is a much-visited tourist area, which produces the internationally famous Freixenet cava. There was heavy police activity in the area, with a 500m cordon established around the scene of the shooting. Helicopters hovered overhead as police guarded roads, the Mossos urging locals not to reveal the location of controls. 4:32PM Bomb robot deployed A robot to defuse the suspected explosives belt has been deployed to the scene of the shooting in Subirats. Android Oreo: Best features of Google's new operating system and how to download it Posted: 21 Aug 2017 12:42 PM PDT Google has announced that its new mobile software is called Android Oreo. The eighth version of Google's operating system, Android Oreo brings with it an improved battery life and multitasking. It limits apps from running in the background to preserve battery and memory, and it lets users perform multiple tasks at once, such as browsing the web and watching a video. The software has been partly redesigned, with more versatile app icons and 60 new emoji. A selection of the new emoji coming to Android Credit: Emojipedia Here are the best features and everything you need to know about Android Oreo. When can I download the software? Android Oreo is already available to download through Google's beta programme and is now accessible through the Android Open Source Project. The final version of Android Oreo will roll out to those on the beta programme today. A bird? A plane? No, it's #AndroidO, touching down to Earth for #Eclipse2017 & bringing super (sweet) new powers: https://t.co/7nslzmxar3pic.twitter.com/MFxHxUdiia— Android (@Android) August 18, 2017 It is not clear when the software will be available to the wider public, but Google said it has entered the final stages of testing on the Pixel, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. "We expect to start rolling out in phases soon," it said. Google normally ships its own-brand devices with a pure version of its software. The company is due to unveil the Pixel 2 smartphone later this year. What devices is it available on and how can I get it? For those not on the beta programme the wait for wider rollouts begins. You should get a notification when your update is ready. You can also check by going to Settings > About > System updates > Check for update. If you don't want to wait, you can enroll in the Beta programme now at this link. Sign in with the account connected to your phone and you should get a notification almost instantly allowing you to download the software. For more information on how to download it to your device, check out Google's blog for instructions. Best features of Android Oreo Improved battery life To enhance the battery life of Android devices, Google is blocking apps from carrying out certain tasks when they're running in the background. The restrictions include an app reacting to "implicit broadcasts", or changes on a device such as Wi-Fi turning on or a picture being taken. It will also limit some background services and location updates when an app isn't in use. As well as saving battery, the update will save on memory. Google said it has also improved the launch time on Android Oreo, with the Pixel phone about to boot twice as fast than when it's running Nougat. Limited notifications With most people overwhelmed with the number of notifications they receive on a daily basis, Google is introducing new ways to control how many you see and how they come through. Users will be able to manage each app individually with "fine-grained control". For example, in news they will be able to select what areas they're interested in hearing about. Users can check their notifications by tapping the three notification dots. They can also be swiped away more easily, Google said. The first is "picture in picture" display which allows videos to keep playing in a smaller screen while users browse other sites, send a message or make a call. The new feature works with video chat windows and YouTube content. Google has also made it easier for consumers to use a second screen alongside their Android device with the ability to launch a program on a remote display. Improved and easier security A help to those who are fed up of having to type their password out whenever they want to log in to a website or app, Android Oreo has a feature called Autofill that remembers the details for consumers' most used apps. Google has also enhanced the security of the Play Store, which will now detect and remove harmful apps automatically. The company said it would scan more than 50 billion apps per day across 2 billion devices running Android 4.2 and later. It has also created a range of Instant Apps that can be accessed without being downloaded. Android secrets, shortcuts and hidden features you should know about Find my device Similar to Apple's Find my iPhone, Google has introduced a feature that lets people locate, lock and wipe their devices in the event that they go missing. New emoji and icons Android Oreo will come with 60 new emoji and a redesign of the current "blob" characters. It also includes new colour support for app developers and the ability to animate and change the shape of icons. Accused of assault in S.Africa, Zimbabwe's Grace Mugabe flies home Posted: 20 Aug 2017 07:37 AM PDT Zimbabwe's first lady Grace Mugabe flew home from South Africa on Sunday, state media said, ending a week of confusion over her whereabouts after she allegedly assaulted a model. Mugabe, who had been sought by police for allegedly attacking the 20-year-old model at a Johannesburg hotel, was granted diplomatic immunity in the case by South Africa's foreign minister on Saturday. "The minister has made the determination that the conferring of diplomatic immunity is warranted in this particular instance," the ministry said Sunday, citing a need "to maintain good inter-governmental relations" in the region. |
Guy falls into a giant sinkhole because he was too busy looking at his phone Posted: 21 Aug 2017 03:28 AM PDT Let this be a lesson to us all. A man riding a scooter was going down a street in the Chinese city of Guangxi, when a massive sinkhole suddenly opened up ahead of him. SEE ALSO: Giant sinkhole appears overnight, swallows 25 tonnes of fish His arm up, looking at his cell phone, he remains oblivious to the scene and carries on driving — until he falls right in. Here's the moment it happened: Large sinkhole forms in Guangxi early Thursday. Scooter driver doesn't see it in time, launches right into it (driver OK). pic.twitter.com/ME4YfD2Va6 — People's Daily,China (@PDChina) August 18, 2017 According to Chinese reports, the man was uninjured and managed to climb out of the pit, which measured two metres (6 ft) deep, eight metres long (26 ft) and five meters (16 ft) wide. While sinkholes don't usually open in the middle of the road for no reason, it's been happening more in rapidly urbanising parts of China, where extensive roadworks shifts the soil underneath the asphalt. Authorities have yet to offer an official reason for the sinkhole. But users on Chinese social media website Weibo had little sympathy for the rider. "He's using a phone while riding a scooter. Sorry I really have no sympathy," said one user. "It's fine if you walk on the sidewalk while using your phone but this is too much, it's so dangerous," another chipped in. "What the heck was he thinking playing with his phone while riding?" one asked. Well one thing's for sure, he probably won't be using his phone while driving again for a long time. Migrant boats in Black Sea spark fears of new route Posted: 21 Aug 2017 08:45 AM PDT Romanian authorities said Monday that they had caught a fishing boat with 68 asylum seekers off Romania's coast, the second such incident in a week, raising fears that a new migrant route to Europe is opening up. The boat carrying Iraqis and Syrians, including 23 children, was intercepted late Sunday in the Black Sea in Romania's southeastern Constanta region, officials said. The group was brought to the port of Mangalia for medical examinations on Monday before being handed over to the immigration authorities, she said. |

Posted: 21 Aug 2017 05:41 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Before he became president, Donald Trump rarely talked about Afghanistan. When he did, he often called for a swift end to America's longest war. Now that he's in office — the third American president to oversee the conflict — few in his administration talk of ending the war abruptly. In an address to the nation Monday night, the president is expected to announce that the war will press on, with more U.S. troops potentially headed to Afghanistan. Trump appears to have aligned behind a Pentagon plan for more forces, one as much aimed at stabilizing the Afghan government and breaking a stalemate with the Taliban as a speedy end to the fighting. |

How to view the solar eclipse safely - and without glasses Posted: 21 Aug 2017 10:59 AM PDT Solar eclipses have captivated and mystified mankind for centuries. But what's the safest way to view one? FOLLOW THE SOLAR ECLIPSE WITH OUR LIVEBLOG NOW! The most important message is never to look directly at the Sun, even through sunglasses or dark material such as a bin liner or photographic negative. Makeshift filters may not screen out the harmful infrared radiation that can burn the retina of the eye. Here are some of the best safe methods of observing the magical moment when the Moon moves in front of the Sun. Great American eclipse, in pictures Using a mirror People watch a total solar eclipse from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, an archipelago administered by Norway in 2015. Credit: AFP Cover a small flat mirror with paper that has a small hole cut in it. The hole does not have to be circular but should be no wider than 5mm. A larger hole will produce a brighter but fuzzier image. Prop up or clamp the mirror so that it reflects the sunlight onto a pale screen or wall, ideally through a window. A projection distance of five metres (16.4 feet) will produce an image of the Sun just over 5cm across. The eclipse can be seen in the image as the Moon starts to take a "bite" out of the Sun, appearing upside down compared with its position in the sky. If clouds move across the face of the Sun, they can be seen as well. The smaller the mirror and further away the wall, the sharper the image will be. Experiment with the distances and mirror size. Do not look into the mirror during the eclipse as this is just as dangerous as looking directly at the Sun. A big advantage of this method is that it allows a number of people to watch the eclipse at the same time - ideal for schools. 10 amazing places in America to watch the 2017 solar eclipse Make a pinhole viewer Pinholes allow light through them and can create an image like a lens. Make a small hole in a piece of card using a compass or other sharp-pointed implement. Standing with your back to the Sun, position another white card behind the one with the pinhole so that the Sun projects an image onto it. An alternative method uses a cereal box or something similar. Make a pinhole in one edge, point it towards the Sun, and a tiny image will be seen projected onto the inside of the box. A piece of white paper or card placed inside will make it easier to see. Never look through the pinhole at the Sun. Projection from binoculars or a telescope Cover one eyepiece of a pair of binoculars with a lens cap and face the "big" end of the binoculars towards the Sun. The uncovered lens will project an image of the Sun that can be cast onto a plain card held about a foot away. Use the focus wheel to sharpen the image. Ideally, the binoculars should be fastened to a tripod or stand. A cardboard "collar" with holes cut to fit the large lenses will shade the card on which the image is projected. A small telescope can be used the same way. Eclipse enthusiasts, photographers and television crews gather to watch a solar eclipse in Washington, US, 1979. Credit: Randy Wood/The Oregonian via AP Colander method Take an ordinary kitchen colander and stand with your back to the Sun holding it in one hand and a piece of paper in the other. The holes in the colander can be used to project multiple eclipse images onto the paper. An ordinary kitchen colander can be used to see an eclipse safely. Eclipse viewing glasses These are the only way of viewing the eclipse directly, other than through a telescope fitted with a professional filter. Similar to 3D glasses, eclipse viewers are made from card and inlaid with a special material that cuts the Sun's light down 100,000 times. If using a viewer, check for holes or scratches as it is only safe if undamaged. Eclipse viewers are being given away free with the Society for Popular Astronomy's members' magazine and the BBC's Sky at Night magazine. Watch the footage of the eclipse on TV It might sound boring but the safest way to see an eclipse is to view it indirectly from the comfort of your home. |
