Stormy G20 ends with opt-outs for Trump on climate, trade Posted: 08 Jul 2017 07:21 PM PDT World leaders made concessions on trade and climate language to Donald Trump Saturday at the end of the most fractious and riot-hit G20 summit ever, in exchange for preserving a fragile unity of the club of major industrialised and emerging economies. "Where there is no consensus, the communique spelt out the discord," said host Chancellor Angela Merkel. |

Tesla’s Model S is far more popular than most other luxury vehicles Posted: 09 Jul 2017 12:01 PM PDT Deliveries of Tesla's Model S and Model X during the second quarter of 2017 weren't as strong as some analysts were anticipating, with the company announcing that it delivered 22,000 vehicles over the last three months. The figure was a tad lower than the 25,000 vehicles Tesla delivered during the first quarter of 2017. Still, the 22,000 vehicles Tesla delivered during Q2 marked a 53% increase compared to the same quarter a year-ago, an impressive feat no matter how you look at it. What's more, demand for Tesla vehicles during the quarter remained robust, with the company explaining that a production issue involving its 100 kWh battery packs led to delayed deliveries and a delivery figure that was lower than some were hoping for. All told, Tesla during the first half of 2017 delivered 47,100 vehicles, a figure it said it will likely eclipse during the latter half of 2017.
Nonetheless, Goldman Sachs earlier this week downgraded Tesla amidst fears that demand for the company's Model X and Model S may have already peaked. In a note obtained by Business Insider, analyst David Tamberrino writes:
In turn, Tamberrino placed a $180 price target on Tesla shares, a uniquely pessimistic projection given that Tesla shares are currently trading in the $300 range. Following Tamberrino's report, shares of Tesla plummeted by more than 50 points. Funny thing is, if we take a look at Model S sales exclusively, a different narrative emerges. As highlighted by Zachary Shahan over at Clean Technica, Model S sales are particularly impressive when measured up against other luxury sedans. "Another dramatic point from the table and chart above is how far ahead the Model S seems to be," Shahan observes. "Even if you add up Audi A6, Audi A7, and Audi A8 sales, they don't get up to the Tesla Model S sales estimate for 2017. It looks even worse for the old automakers if you add up BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class sales. Adding up Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class sales is the only way to actually get two models to surpass Model S sales." Indeed, the notion that demand for current Tesla vehicles has plateaued seems a bit misplaced. Especially in a field littered with industry veterans, the ability for Tesla to sell more Model S vehicles than more established luxury cars is truly remarkable. And besides, with the Model 3 release looming on the horizon, it stands to reason that Tesla's best days are ahead of it. As a final point, it's worth noting that most Tesla sales shortfalls typically have nothing to do with demand but more to do with Tesla's ability to furnish supply, a good problem that most other automakers would love to have. |

KKK marchers in Virginia town met by throngs of counter-protesters Posted: 08 Jul 2017 02:28 PM PDT Supporters of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan marched in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday to protest the planned removal of a statue of General Robert E. Lee, who oversaw Confederate forces in the US Civil War. The Klan marchers were met by hundreds of jeering counter-protesters in this quiet university town, where the protest by the notorious white power group was authorized by officials in Virginia on free speech grounds. As the demonstration got underway, dozens of marchers -- some carrying Confederate flags, a few in the distinctive white hood worn by Klan members -- paraded past hundreds of people shouting "racists go home!" and other chants. |
Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka 'fills in for him at G20 world leaders meeting' Posted: 08 Jul 2017 03:54 AM PDT Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka has apparently filled in for the US President at a round-table meeting with world leaders at the G20. Ms Trump accompanied Mr Trump to a session at the Hamburg summit and later sat in his seat next to Theresa May, Angela Merkel and other world leaders, according to a photograph. Ms Trump, who works as an advisor to her father at the White House, was photographed sitting in his seat by a Russian G20 official who shared the picture on social media. |

Putin plane makes detour avoiding Poland, Baltics on way to G20: flight tracker Posted: 08 Jul 2017 03:37 AM PDT By Andrius Sytas VILNIUS (Reuters) - A plane carrying Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Germany made a detour of about 500 km (300 miles) to avoid flying over NATO members Poland or the Baltic states, data from a flight tracker showed. According to the FlightRadar24 website, a Russian government jet flying from Moscow to Hamburg on Thursday deviated from the direct route over Belarus and Poland, which was once a Soviet bloc state but joined the Western military alliance after the fall of communism. |

Japan floods death toll rises to 15 Posted: 07 Jul 2017 09:42 PM PDT The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in southern Japan has risen to 15, a government official said Saturday, as rescuers continued work to evacuate isolated survivors. Raging rivers overflowing with water and mud have devastated swathes of Kyushu -- the southernmost of Japan's four main islands -- after heavy rainfall, sweeping away roads and houses and destroying schools. Thousands of rescuers have been fighting through thick mud and battling rain to search for missing and stranded people, with more than 500 believed to still be cut off, according to public broadcaster NHK. |

Western Canada wildfires prompt state of emergency, evacuations Posted: 08 Jul 2017 01:22 PM PDT By Dennis Owen KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA (Reuters) - Canada's federal government on Saturday offered to help British Columbia in response to fast-spreading wildfires that forced thousands to evacuate their homes as hot, dry weather conditions prevented firefighters from controlling the blazes. Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said in a Tweet on Saturday that the government was closely monitoring the wildfires in the Western Canadian province. "Fed. government is ready to respond if we receive a request for assistance from the province," Sajjan said some 12 hours after Western Canada's British Columbia declared its first state of emergency in 14 years. |

Germany's G20 street chaos puts political heat on Merkel Posted: 08 Jul 2017 08:45 AM PDT Raging street battles that marred Germany's G20 summit have sparked a political fight over how Hamburg could descend into "mob rule" and why Chancellor Angela Merkel chose a hotbed of leftist militancy as the venue. Germany's top-selling Bild daily was withering in its condemnation of the chaos that saw far-left and anarchist radicals torch rows of cars, loot shops and hurl rocks and bottles from burning barricades at riot police. Sadly, it applies in Hamburg," the newspaper thundered Saturday, slamming the summit as a "debacle". |

Germany's partner nations are Ghana, Ivory Coast and Tunisia, while Ethiopia, Morocco, Rwanda and Senegal are also taking part. |

More than 200,000 children married in US over the last 15 years Posted: 08 Jul 2017 01:47 AM PDT More than 200,000 children were married in the US over the past 15 years, new figures have revealed. The minimum age for marriage across most of the US is 18, but every state has exemptions – such as parental consent or pregnancy – which allow younger children to tie the knot. In May, the high-profile Republican governor for New Jersey declined to sign into law a measure that would have made his state the first to ban child marriage without exception. |
