Iranian students feel robbed of their American dreams Posted: 30 Jan 2017 08:16 AM PST By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin DUBAI (Reuters) - The new U.S. immigration curbs have cast uncertainty over the futures of thousands of Iranian students in the United States, with many losing hope of being able to finish their studies or find a job in the country. President Donald Trump's executive order bans travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries including Iran for three months, and there is little certainty of what will happen after that. Many of the students have spent their families' life savings to pay for an American higher education, which they hope will be a ticket to a well-paid job in the West or Iran. |
Little Global Evidence Suggests School Choice Helps Performance Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:56 AM PST In some countries, this has extended to replacing the public system of schools with government vouchers that can be used to pay for private schools -- a priority of Betsy DeVos, the nominee for U.S. education secretary. Advocates argue that school choice promotes competition that will improve performance and allow the freedom of choice that will best serve student educational needs and family preferences. Nobel prize-winning economist Milton Friedman designed an educational voucher plan some 60 years ago that was adopted by Sweden and Chile. |
Teachers Keep Teens Learning on Cyber Snow Days Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:00 AM PST Last year, Barren County High School in Glasgow, Kentucky, also implemented at-home learning days instead of snow days, says Brad Johnson, the school's principal. "We've had a lot of success with it," says English teacher Keri Mosier. Students at Barren County High may get a reading passage or an ACT review packet to complete at home, for example, says Johnson. |
