Fed's Yellen trumpets education in changing economy Posted: 19 Dec 2016 10:36 AM PST Changing technologies and globalization have put a premium on completing a college education in order to get and keep higher-paying jobs, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said on Monday. "The drivers of this increasing demand for those with college and graduate degrees are likely to continue to be important," Yellen said in prepared remarks to a University of Baltimore commencement ceremony at which she was due to receive an honorary degree. In her speech, Yellen said that technology had allowed low-skilled jobs to be replaced by automation while globalization had also caused jobs that require less education to move overseas. |
Incoming NC Governor Says HB2 'Bathroom Law' Will Be Repealed in Special Session Posted: 19 Dec 2016 09:55 AM PST The law requires public schools, public college campuses and government agencies to designate multiple-occupancy bathrooms and changing facilities, such as locker rooms, for use only by people based on their "biological sex" stated on their birth certificate. Under the law, transgender people may not use bathrooms and changing facilities that correspond to their gender identity unless they get the sex on their birth certificate changed. |
U.S. school an antidote to transgender discrimination complaints Posted: 19 Dec 2016 06:03 AM PST The non-profit private Pride School Atlanta is seen as the first school in the American South focused on the LGBT community and one of few addressing similar concerns in the nation. "They don't have to fight for the right to exist here," Christian Zsilavetz, the school's transgender co-founder and director, said in an interview. Court records and data reviewed by Reuters show a 12-fold surge in transgender student-related civil rights complaints lodged with the U.S. Department of Education - from seven in 2014 to 84 in 2016. |
Turkish school says warns German teachers over Christian content Posted: 19 Dec 2016 05:00 AM PST By Tuvan Gumrukcu ANKARA (Reuters) - The administrators of a prestigious Istanbul high school have warned teachers over Christian and Christmas-related content in German language classes, the school said on Monday, setting the stage for another diplomatic row between Ankara and Berlin. Relations between Germany and Turkey, a candidate to join the European Union, have been strained following a failed coup in July as Turkish authorities have detained, suspended or arrested more than 100,000 people, leading to widespread concern in Europe about the rule of law in Turkey. "When we received information that German teachers were teaching increasingly more texts on Christmas and Christianity in a manner that is outside the curriculum ... our administration arranged a meeting with the German department and requested information," the school said. |
