Illinois teachers' pension fund eyes 14.5 percent payment hike for state

Posted: 28 Oct 2016 02:15 PM PDT

Illinois' biggest public worker pension fund said on Friday its board gave initial approval to a state contribution of $4.56 billion in fiscal 2018, a 14.5 percent increase over the current fiscal year. "By any measure, $4.56 billion is a lot of money, but that amount is a direct product of the perpetual underfunding of TRS by state government over the last 76 years," TRS Executive Director Dick Ingram said in a statement. The huge pension debt, along with a budget impasse that has left the state limping through a second straight fiscal year without a complete budget, have pounded Illinois' credit ratings to the lowest levels among the 50 states.

Federal judge blocks two abortion laws in Alabama

Posted: 28 Oct 2016 10:47 AM PDT

(Reuters) - A U.S. federal judge on Thursday blocked abortion restrictions in Alabama that limit how close clinics can be to public schools and ban a procedure used to terminate pregnancies in the second trimester. Judge Myron Thompson in the District Court for the Middle District of Alabama issued a preliminary injunction, ruling that the laws are likely to be found unconstitutional, according to online court records. Thompson wrote the law would likely force the closing of clinics in Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, where the majority of abortions in the state are performed, causing an undue burden for women seeking an abortion and other services.
