Racial Bias Starts in Preschool, but It Isn’t Only Teachers’ Fault Posted: 30 Sep 2016 02:55 PM PDT Like the movement protesting police use of deadly force against black Americans, the unequal application of school discipline against students of color is on the national agenda, thanks in part to President Barack Obama and Education Secretary John King. A Yale University study released this week, however, shows that a common denominator in both issues—whites' implicit bias—begins to affect students, particularly black boys, in the early childhood years. LGBT Students Say Teachers Are Still Lax on Homophobia Posted: 30 Sep 2016 04:28 AM PDT Given the pressures of homework, tests, and puberty, the last thing middle and high school students should have to worry about is feeling safe at school. For the report, From Teasing to Torment: School Climate Revisited, the Gay Lesbian, and Straight Education Network surveyed nearly 1,400 middle and high school students ages 13 to 18 and about 1,000 secondary school teachers. Nearly three-fourths of students said they'd been verbally or physically harassed in the past year, and about half of teachers said that bullying is a significant problem on campus. |
