(AP) — The Kansas State Board of Education voted unanimously on Tuesday to ignore a directive from President Obama's administration that public schools allow transgender students to use restrooms matching their gender identity, and instead the board left decisions up to school districts.

According to a new poll of more than 1,300 parents by the group Learning Heroes, about 90 percent say their kids in Grades K through 8 are performing at or above grade level in reading and math. Obviously parents need help from public schools to better engage in their child's education.

The Beyhive gets in formation to raise $82,234 for Flint Posted: 14 Jun 2016 11:15 AM PDT The world becomes a better place when the Beyhive and Beyoncé get in formation. On June 13, Beyoncé's company, Parkwood Entertainment, donated $82,234 to the people of Flint, Michigan, to continue supporting recovery efforts from the recent water crisis. SEE ALSO: Obama admits the truth we all knew already: 'Beyonce runs the world' Donations came from fans who purchased tickets to the Formation World Tour. Concert attendees also had the option donate additional funds to help the cause.  A check was made out to United Way of Genesee County, a privately funded nonprofit in communities across the country. According to a press release, the organization has distributed water filters, bottled water and provided emergency services to residents of Flint. "After all the short-term needs of Flint residents have been met, United Way of Genesee County will provide any remaining funds to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, which will provide long-term developmental, educational and health support to children and families in the area," read a statement from United Way.  BeyGOOD, the philanthropic arm of Beyoncé's brand, has partnered with United Way to promote volunteerism and to support Flint during the Formation World Tour.  Fourteen local high school students also received gifts, help with college finances and tickets to the Detroit stop of Beyoncé's tour.

Indian student gets a BMW from his teachers for topping an engineering entrance exam Posted: 14 Jun 2016 02:20 AM PDT An Indian student has been rewarded a swanky red BMW by his coaching institute for topping the entrance exam for India's prestigious engineering colleges, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). SEE ALSO: This 9-year-old girl is the youngest developer at WWDC 2016 Tanmaya Shekhawat had studied at the coaching institute in the western Indian town of Sikar in the state of Rajasthan, and got the 11th rank at the highly-competitive IIT entrance exam. The vehicle isn't new though, and was bought two years ago by the institute director.  The institute's director had reportedly announced that he would gift his car to anyone who got a rank under 20. After being driven for 1,500 km, it is now worth Rs 2.75 million ($40,900). This is the first vehicle for Shekhawat's family, and the student said that he would have to learn driving in order to drive the BMW from the coaching institute to his home. In India, numerous coaching institute give away gifts to high-performing students as part of their publicity to draw more aspirants. Shekhawat's extravagant gift is likely to be a marketing strategy for the institute to attract students to the town of Sikar, which is trying to become a coaching hub for aspiring engineers.  Sikar is hoping to replicate the success of nearby town of Kota, which houses a cluster of coaching institutes for engineering and medical entrance exams. Over 1,60,000 students enroll in these institutes every year. Recently, Kota has been in the news for a string of student suicides linked to its high pressure environment.

Tests find elevated lead levels at 5 more Chicago schools Posted: 13 Jun 2016 09:33 PM PDT CHICAGO (AP) — Elevated lead levels have been found in water in five more Chicago public schools, bringing to 19 the number of buildings where tests have uncovered levels that exceed a federal standard of 15 parts per billion.
