Washington faces days of cleanup after epic blizzard Posted: 25 Jan 2016 02:42 PM PST By Doina Chiacu and Barbara Goldberg WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Washington will need several more days to return to normal after a weekend blizzard dropped more than 2 feet (60 cm) of snow along the U.S. East Coast, likely causing billions of dollars in damage and killing more than 30. The nation's capital was at a standstill, with federal government offices ordered shut on Monday, schools in the district and surrounding suburbs shuttered and the U.S. House of Representatives canceling all votes until next week. Washington's mayor, Muriel Bowser, said that city public schools would remain closed on Tuesday but that city government offices would reopen. |

45 percent of Nigerian graduates unemployed: survey Posted: 25 Jan 2016 12:57 PM PST Nigeria needs to ramp up training and job creation schemes for university graduates, a leading recruitment agency said on Monday, after a survey indicated nearly half of those with a higher education qualification were unemployed. A total of 41,032 (45.72 percent) of the 89,755 people who responded to the survey on jobberman.com said they were unemployed graduates, the Lagos-based firm said in an emailed statement. The results demonstrated the "need for urgent actions on both public and private sector operators", calling the number of unemployed graduates "cause for worry", it added. |

Are Detroit sick-outs legal? School district takes teachers to court Posted: 25 Jan 2016 07:09 AM PST Detroit teachers on Monday plan to rally outside a courthouse where a judge is set to hear a case that could force them to stop skipping class to protest working conditions in the city's public schools. The so-called "sick-outs" have led to the closure of dozens of Detroit schools over the past two weeks, keeping thousands of students from going to class. On Wednesday, the Detroit school district filed a lawsuit to stop the absences, but a judge refused to issue the temporary restraining order that would have halted the sick-outs immediately. |
Community Colleges Power Up Video Game Programs Posted: 25 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST For some, playing video games is fun. "It's not always a stable career," says Deb Solomon, professor of computer gaming and simulation at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life," says Russell Allen, a fall 2015 Montgomery College gaming graduate now studying simulation and digital entertainment at the University of Baltimore. |
Liberal Arts Colleges Where Students Are Eager to Enroll Posted: 25 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST While college officials can control which applicants they admit to their campuses, they can't know for sure who will ultimately choose to enroll. Even well-known and highly ranked schools, such as Williams College in Massachusetts, may find that less than half of accepted students start taking classes. |
