Boston University revokes Bill Cosby's honorary degree. Should others join?

On Tuesday, Boston University became the latest of around a dozen schools to rescind Bill Cosby's honorary degrees in light of a wave of sexual assault allegations. Dr. Cosby's "treatment of women has brought significant and lasting discredit upon himself and is inconsistent with the University's mission and values," the Boston University Board of Trustees wrote in a community letter, announcing that the Board was revoking Cosby's honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree that the school awarded in May 2014.

In a statement on its website, the Houston Independent School District said police were sweeping campuses as a precaution, but the threat did not appear to be credible. Miami-Dade County Public Schools also received a threat late Wednesday, according to a statement on the district's website. The new round of threats came a day after the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest in the nation, abruptly canceled class for its more than 640,000 students after receiving an email that said an attack with guns and bombs was planned at multiple locations.

Returning high school students found themselves thrown back into the throes of final exams as the semester ended, with police providing a stepped up presence at campuses to reassure those left jittery by the unprecedented shutdown. Authorities conducted an extensive search on Tuesday of the Los Angeles Unified School District's more than 1,000 schools, and said that by late in the day the buildings were safe and students could return.
