Michigan governor readies legislation to fix Detroit schools Posted: 19 Oct 2015 04:30 PM PDT (Reuters) - Detroit's public schools should be split between a new community school district and the current district to raise academic performance and avoid financial collapse, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said on Monday. The new district would be responsible for operations, while current district would be charged with eliminating a budget deficit. The Republican governor warned that without his plan, which he expects to be introduced in the state legislature this month, the school system risked a financial crisis that would not necessarily lead to bankruptcy but could result in a debt default that would have repercussions for the state and its other school districts. |

Oil collapse gives US colleges a test on backpedaling donors Posted: 19 Oct 2015 01:24 PM PDT AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — It's easy to see what oil money means to the University of Texas. Tuition hasn't budged in three years because of gushing wells in the Permian Basin. More than a few buildings, including the football team headquarters, are named after wildcatters, and a pump jack stands outside the 100,000-seat stadium to commemorate the 1920s oil boom. |

Foster a climate of tolerance and respect: Creating a safe environment for students and educators is an important first step in preventing bullying, according to StopBullying.gov, a government advocacy website. |

Students protest at South Africa's top universities over tuition fee hike Posted: 19 Oct 2015 05:45 AM PDT By Nqobile Dludla JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Thousands of students rallied at top South African universities on Monday in protest at plans to hike tuition fees, extending a spate of campus unrest that has included demonstrations against colonial-era statues and the language of instruction. South Africa's student body, mostly black, is hampered by tight funding and the lingering effects of discrimination dating from the era of white-minority rule, with the proportion of blacks in higher education still relatively low. The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where the protest wave began last week, this weekend suspended its fee hike plan pending a final decision later in the day, while Rhodes University and the University of Cape Town (UCT) suspended classes in response to student demonstrations. |
5 Questions to Ask When Choosing an Online Graduate Nursing Program Posted: 19 Oct 2015 05:30 AM PDT For nurses who wish to advance their careers, pursuing an online master's or doctoral degree may be a great choice, experts say. Some experts say that when it comes to graduate-level study, the nursing field is starting to move away from the master's degree and shifting more heavily toward doctoral degrees such as the Ph.D. or the Doctor of Nursing Practice. "A lot of schools have eliminated that master's degree for advanced practice nurses. |
