High school kids may drink less where rules for adults are stricter Posted: 01 Jun 2015 02:15 PM PDT By Kathryn Doyle (Reuters Health) - In states with stronger alcohol policies, high school students tend to report less drinking, even when the policies don't target youth directly, according to a new study. The findings support the Institute of Medicine, which says strategies to reduce and prevent underage drinking must target parents and adults, the authors wrote in the journal Pediatrics. "This is the first study to examine possible effects of all state alcohol control policies collectively, and the subset of state policies most relevant to underage drinking," said Mallie J. Paschall of the Prevention Research Center at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation in Oakland, California. |

French minister warns against 'militant secularity' Posted: 31 May 2015 05:14 PM PDT France's education minister on Monday warned against "militant secularity" in a country where a long-standing ban on veils, Jewish kippahs and other religious signs in schools continues to cause controversy. "We have to be careful not to have a form of militant secularity in our country, which is counter-productive for children we would like to see adhere to secularity," Najat Vallaud-Belkacem told reporters. In 2004, spooked that the growing number of Muslim girls wearing headscarves in public schools was eroding this separation, the government brought in a controversial law on secularity that banned students from wearing "conspicuous" signs of religion. |
