This is the trade-off for attending Malindi Central Primary School, one of Kenya's many church-sponsored public schools. Administrators are struggling to figure out how to accommodate a growing and increasingly devout Muslim population in public schools founded and often funded by churches. "There is this fear that Muslims are stepping on other people's toes by demanding to practice their faith in places that don't belong to them," says Hassan Ole Naado, head of the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM). |
