How To Really Fix Our Student Debt Crisis Posted: 31 Oct 2014 03:00 AM PDT One of my favorite statistics that nobody knows is that the federal government already spends enough on higher education in grants and tax breaks — about $66.7 billion — to cover the cost of tuition at all public colleges and universities. This wouldn't make college completely free — students still would have to pay for room and board and supplies (perhaps states, who currently fund much of higher education, could defray those costs for students in need) — but it would create a "public option" at drastically reduced rates, which private colleges would have to keep up with to stay competitive, lowering costs throughout the system. Germany already does this, abolishing tuition at its public universities. |
Connecticut school lifts ban on girl barred over Ebola fears Posted: 30 Oct 2014 05:28 PM PDT (Reuters) - A 7-year-old girl banned from attending school in Connecticut over fears that she may be carrying the Ebola virus after a trip to Nigeria will be allowed back on Friday, according to a joint statement by the school district and the girl's father. A widely publicized lawsuit brought by the father, Stephen Opayemi, against Milford Public Schools demanding her readmission will be settled, according to the statement, without giving further details.
