Op-Ed: Why School Desegregation Needs to Be Back on the Education Reform Agenda Posted: 14 May 2014 12:49 PM PDT On May 17, 1954, Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren handed down a unanimous decision in the case of Oliver Brown, et al. v. Board of Education of Topeka, et al., ruling that because separate public facilities for different races were inherently unequal, segregation in public schools constituted a violation of the 14th Amendment's guarantee to all citizens of equal protection before the law. Advocates for educational justice should think about how we can organize to get public officials to redesign district boundaries, which would give us more options for integrating schools and creating equitable school funding streams. |

'Obamacore': How Propaganda Is Distorting the Common Core Debate Posted: 14 May 2014 11:04 AM PDT A new report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center titled "Public Schools in the Crosshairs: Far-Right Propaganda and the Common Core State Standards" says there is a "fierce grassroots campaign threatening to derail the Common Core State Standards…fueled by far-right propaganda that relies heavily on distortions, outright falsehoods, and demonizing conspiracy theories promoted by antigovernment extremists." The SPLC, based in Birmingham, Ala., is a nonprofit civil rights organization known for its legal victories against white supremacist groups and for uncovering numerous militia groups and extremists in America. Researched by the SPLC's Intelligence Project and Teaching Tolerance program, the report notes that Christian conservatives and members of the Tea Party movement believe that Common Core standards are being used in schools as "government indoctrination camps" to promote homosexuality and an anti-American, anti-Christian lifestyle. "These claims may sound outlandish—and they are—but the fact is, millions of Americans are absorbing this extremist propaganda, and it's having a very real impact," Heidi Beirich, director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, said in a statement. |
Suspect charged in shooting of five near Atlanta high school Posted: 14 May 2014 01:18 AM PDT Those shot were believed to be students from Therrell High School in southwest Atlanta, the Atlanta Public Schools system said. The shooting occurred near the school, Atlanta Police Department spokesman John Chafee said in an emailed statement. Marcellus Brooks, 17, was arrested and charged with five counts of aggravated assault, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reported, quoting Chafee. The high school was briefly locked down, although the shooting did not take place on its grounds, the Atlanta school system said. |
