The Biggest Public School Problem Might Be the Brand Posted: 28 Mar 2014 12:45 PM PDT Most people believe that charter and private schools are preferable alternatives to traditional public schools. According to a recent Gallup poll, 78 percent of Americans believe that private schools provide a good or excellent education. And traditional public schools (where the vast majority of K-12 students are educated)? This wouldn't be much of a story if the data on school performance supported these assumptions. |
Survey: Teens Are Stressed Over Money Posted: 28 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PDT High school students are also anxious about their future student loan debt, finding a job one day and never attaining the standard of living their parents enjoy, according to a survey of just over 1,000 13 - to 17 - year - olds released Friday by H&R Block. "There's enough information through social media and the media to put fear in them about their futures," says Kathy Collins, chief marketing officer for H&R Block. |
Closing arguments in major California education reform case Posted: 27 Mar 2014 05:52 PM PDT Lawyers made closing arguments Thursday in a California trial that could have far-reaching consequences for how teachers at public schools are hired and fired. Nine public school students suing the state say several education laws are so misguided that they saddle schools with substandard teachers who are then nearly impossible to dismiss. "A successful challenge to these teacher tenure regulations could lead to other efforts around the country, just as public employee unions are being criticized in other contexts," says Michael Moreland, a professor at Villanova University School of Law in Philadelphia. Tenure laws that mandate that school districts make teacher tenure decisions after just 18 months – too short a time to properly assess quality, plaintiffs say. |
