Beanie Babies creator gets probation for tax evasion Posted: 14 Jan 2014 12:32 PM PST By Mary Wisniewski CHICAGO (Reuters) - The billionaire creator of Beanie Babies, Ty Warner, will serve two years of probation, including mentoring high school students, following his guilty plea on a tax evasion charge, but no jail time, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday. Warner, 69, who pleaded guilty in October, told U.S. District Court Judge Charles Kocoras in Chicago that his crime was the "biggest mistake" of his life.

Warner, 69, who pleaded guilty in October, said in Chicago federal court that it was the biggest mistake of his life before U.S. District Judge Charles Kocoras handed down the sentence. Resident tuition and required fees at public universities averaged $8,539 for the 2013-2014 school year, compared with $19,465 for nonresidents, according to data reported by 403 ranked public colleges in an annual U.S. News survey. Not only is in-state tuition cheaper than that charged out-of-state students, it is also a fraction of the more than $30,000 average tuition and fees at private universities. Five universities in the Sooner State charged less than $5,200 for 2013-2014 tuition and fees, including Northeastern State University and the University of Central Oklahoma, placing them among the 10 least expensive public schools for in-state students.
