Posted: 30 Oct 2013 09:54 AM PDT

One word describes Faye Hanson Hall: vibrant. She is a professional storyteller and when she talks to you, she grabs your attention and doesn't let go. I don't ask my students to do something I wouldn't want to do. Hall is the Gifted and Talented Coordinator for the Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative School District in New Hampshire. A National Board Certified teacher, she began her career in the Little Rock School District in Arkansas and advocates for high ability students from rural areas.

New Gainful Employment Rules May Affect College Programs

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 07:20 AM PDT

The last time the Student Loan Ranger talked about gainful employment regulations for colleges was in 2012, when the regulations were briefly slated to take effect and then were abruptly put on hold after a district judge vacated portions of them. We said then it was important that Congress and the Obama administration not back down from the gainful employment fight - and they haven't. In fact, the Department of Education recently came back with a new set of proposed regulations. The gainful employment regulations apply only to approximately 11,000 vocational programs designed to lead directly to employment.

Pearson profits to slip on weak U.S. college demand

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 04:13 AM PDT

British publisher Pearson said it expected 2013 adjusted operating profit to be lower than last year due to weaker demand for college textbooks in its North American Education division, sending its shares sliding. "While international education sales have accelerated, as expected, there is a more negative tone on North American education margins and the North American higher education business, which is our chief area of structural concern," analysts at Liberum said in a note. Pearson's shares were down 3.15 percent at 1322 pence by 1105 GMT after they hit a 12-year high in the run-up to the results. Pearson has undergone a raft of management and structural changes in the last year including the merger of its Penguin books division with Random House, designed to increase its focus on emerging markets and digital services.

College Tuition Only Increased 2.9%, but You Probably Still Can't Afford ItCollege tuitions are no longer increasing with the speed of a runaway train (or one of those shiny Japanese bullet trains), according to a newly released report. But this small increase comes after tuition hikes of 4.5% and 8.5%.  "This does not mean that college is suddenly more affordable," says economist Sandy Baum, co-author of Trends in Higher Education reports on tuition and financial aid, released by the non-profit College Board. A college degree is non-negotiable in the current job market.
