Chicago mayor, teachers move to end strike with tentative deal Posted: 14 Sep 2012 04:21 PM PDT CHICAGO (Reuters) - A week-long confrontation between Chicago public school teachers and Mayor Rahm Emanuel moved toward resolution on Friday as the two sides reached a tentative agreement that could end a five-day strike and clear the way for classes to resume on Monday in the third-largest U.S. school district. More than 350,000 Chicago students have been out of school since the beginning of the week after some 29,000 Chicago teachers and support staff walked off the job over Emanuel's education reforms. Negotiators announced that they had reached an agreement in principle on all issues. ... |
College students: New Hampshire is trying to stop us from voting Posted: 14 Sep 2012 03:14 PM PDT Controversy over voter registration and ID laws typically centers on whether they disenfranchise poor and minority voters. Here in New Hampshire, a change in voter registration forms is facing a court challenge because of the hurdles it presents to college students. |

Strike highlights split over poverty's role in learning Posted: 14 Sep 2012 01:05 PM PDT (Reuters) - The Chicago teachers strike, which appeared headed toward a resolution Friday, has underscored a fundamental split over the biggest issue confronting America's public schools: how to provide a decent education to children mired in poverty. Across the U.S., poverty is irrefutably linked to poor academic performance. On last year's national reading exam, nine-year-olds from low-income families scored nearly three full grade levels below their wealthier peers. The gap was nearly as large in math. The poor performance of poor students accounts for all of the achievement gap between ... |
Chicago school board president says 'framework' deal to end strike Posted: 14 Sep 2012 12:39 PM PDT CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chicago school board President David Vitale said on Friday that school negotiators had reached a "framework" agreement with the Chicago Teachers Union on a new contract that will end a strike in the America's third-largest school district. The strike by 29,000 public school teachers and staff has affected more than 350,000 kindergarten, elementary and high school students. It has also caused a damaging confrontation between former Democratic Congressman and top White House aide Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the labor movement. (Reporting By Greg McCune and Karen Pierog. ... |
Op-Ed: ‘What We Are Asking of Beginning Teachers Is Not Sustainable’ Posted: 14 Sep 2012 12:39 PM PDT It was just after dismissal on the first day of school, and Miss S was straightening the desks in her now-quiet classroom. The door creaked as I entered to introduce myself as her New Teacher Center mentor. Miss S turned at the noise, facing me with puffy red eyes and a tear-stained face. Her first day had not gone well. She was already wondering how she was going to face tomorrow. |
Campus Outings: Teachers, Students Punished in Gay-Related School Drama Posted: 14 Sep 2012 11:40 AM PDT James Yoakley knew he would be courting outrage when he approved a student-authored article about the pupil's atheism. As a teacher at Lenoir City High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, he wasn't exactly in a hotbed of progressive religious tolerance. |

Still no deal to end Chicago teachers strike Posted: 13 Sep 2012 11:50 PM PDT CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chicago public school students will stay out of class for a fifth day on Friday, after the teachers union and the nation's third-largest school district negotiated long into the night on reforms sought by Mayor Rahm Emanuel without reaching a deal. The strike by 29,000 public school teachers and support staff, affecting 350,000 kindergarten, elementary and high school students, is the biggest private or public labor dispute in the United States in a year. ... |
Talks to end Chicago teachers strike make progress Posted: 13 Sep 2012 06:56 PM PDT |
Wealthy base helps Emanuel take on Chicago teachers union Posted: 13 Sep 2012 05:06 PM PDT CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel received far more money in campaign donations from wealthy financiers and entrepreneurs backing school reform than from unions, leaving him freer to confront the city's teachers than some fellow Democrats, an examination of donations to his 2011 campaign shows. The city's 29,000 teachers have been on strike since Monday, halting classes in the country's third-largest school district, over contract negotiations that are snagged on job security and Emanuel's plan to rate teachers based on students' standardized test scores. ... |
