In this photo taken April 21, 2010, David Gilbert, an associate professor with the automotive-and-technology program at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., speaks with reporters at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield. Gilbert uncovered possible flaws in Toyota vehicles that was causing some of the world's most popular cars to accelerate suddenly. Electronic messages show that the world's largest automaker tried repeatedly to cast doubt on his findings and even questioned whether he should be employed by the school, which had long been a recipient of company donations.
